Description
Kanji Igari, also known by his ring names Antonio Igari and Anton, is a professional wrestler in the Baki the Grappler series. He is a world-famous fighter, particularly renowned in Japan, and is recognized for his dramatic and charismatic presence in the ring. In his prime, he was considered the number one sports fighter in the world. Physically, Igari is a tall and well-built man, standing 191 centimeters tall and weighing 105 kilograms, with black hair and an age of about 50 years old.
Igari possesses a complex and highly theatrical personality. He is an exceptionally skilled actor who loves the energy of an audience and draws significant motivation and strength from their cheers, performing at his best when spectators are watching and chanting his name. This connection to the crowd is a defining trait, and he can seem like a resigned old man away from the spotlight, only to transform into a powerful star the moment he enters the ring. True to his showman nature, Igari is extremely cunning and relies heavily on psychological warfare. When facing formidable opponents, he uses elaborate tricks to gain an advantage. These tactics have included feigning weakness, begging for mercy, faking the intent to surrender, and even hiring an actress to impersonate his opponent's deceased mother to confuse him. Despite this dishonest and manipulative side, Igari is very honest with himself about his own weaknesses and limits. He also possesses a deep admiration for other great fighters, as seen in his respect for the sumo wrestler Kinryuuzan, the protagonist Baki Hanma, and his rival, Mount Toba.
In the story, Igari serves as a notable opponent during the Maximum Tournament arc. He successfully advances to the third round, where he faces the protagonist, Baki Hanma. Before this match, he uses extensive psychological manipulation to try and unsettle Baki. In the fight itself, he proves capable of inflicting serious damage on the younger fighter by using dirty tactics, such as a low blow, and even temporarily paralyzing Baki's legs by striking his pressure points. Ultimately, however, Baki is able to overcome these tricks and defeats Igari in a contest that turns into a display of pure professional wrestling technique. Following his defeat in the tournament, Igari is the central figure in a gaiden, or side story, called Grappler Baki Gaiden: Antonio Igari vs Mount Toba, which depicts a pro-wrestling match between him and his rival that takes place immediately after the tournament's events.
Igari has key relationships with several characters. He shares a bond of both rivalry and friendship with Mount Toba, another powerful professional wrestler. He holds a great respect for former yokozuna Kinryuuzan, whom he faced in the tournament's second round. Later in the series, during the Most Evil Death Row Convicts saga, Igari becomes a target of the convict Sikorsky. He is brutally attacked and suffers severe injuries, including a deep facial scar and the loss of teeth. His feud with Sikorsky continues as he later mobilizes his wrestling group to ambush the convict, though the attempt is only partially successful.
The character undergoes a notable development arc that extends beyond his initial appearance as a tournament fighter. Initially presented as a savvy but past-his-prime wrestler, his encounter with Baki reaffirms his pride and identity as a performer. A significant development comes much later in the manga. Following the death of real-life wrestler Antonio Inoki, who served as the character's inspiration, the series creator drew a special anecdote. In this epilogue, Igari has become an elderly man who appears to be on his deathbed, only to later fake his own death. He then resurfaces at a mixed martial arts arena, where he attacks and defeats the champion before being arrested as an assault suspect. This final act recontextualizes his entire philosophy of professional wrestling as being a master of subterfuge and psychological tactics, even to the point of manipulating perceptions of life and death.
As a fighter, Igari's abilities are a blend of genuine skill and strategic showmanship. He is a master of several professional wrestling techniques. His notable moves include the Manji Gatame, also known as the swastika hold, a paralyzing submission hold. Another signature technique is the Knuckle Arrow, a powerful punch delivered from a unique position where he grabs the opponent's hair and pulls his fist back like an arrow. He is also proficient in other wrestling moves like the backdrop, dropkick, and headbutt. Furthermore, he demonstrates knowledge of soft martial arts, allowing him to strike specific pressure points to induce temporary paralysis in an opponent. A unique aspect of his durability is his ability to consciously ready his body to absorb incoming attacks, which allows him to withstand powerful blows that would otherwise knock him unconscious. However, this ability is a double-edged sword; if he is unable to react and prepare for a hit, his endurance is no greater than that of an ordinary person.
