Description
Emi Akezawa is the mother of Baki Hanma and the former lover of Yujiro Hanma, the strongest creature on earth. Before meeting her first husband, she is implied to have been a sex worker, but she eventually married a wealthy businessman named Eiichi Akezawa. During their honeymoon, she encountered Yujiro and became immediately fixated on him. When her husband struck her for staring at Yujiro, Yujiro killed Eiichi and then claimed Emi for himself, recognizing a hidden darkness within her that he found appealing. After the death of her husband, she inherited his estate and business, becoming the wealthy leader of the Akezawa Group.

In her early life, Emi was portrayed as a shy and demure girl, but Yujiro sensed a sadistic bloodlust beneath her calm exterior. He chose her as the mother of his child specifically because of this brutal and obsessive quality. Over time, her love for Yujiro became her sole obsession, eclipsing every other aspect of her life, including her duty as a mother. While she initially appeared to be a supportive parent pushing her son to become a great fighter, her true motivation was to mold Baki into a warrior worthy of impressing his father. She readily admitted that the maternal bond meant nothing to her compared to her devotion to Yujiro.

This obsession made her a selfish and emotionally abusive parent. When Yujiro expressed dissatisfaction with Baki’s progress, she became hysterical and violently blamed her young son for his own perceived weakness, even biting him when he tried to hug her. She acted as a cold and calculating matriarch, hiring the best trainers to monitor her son’s growth but showing him little genuine affection. Her primary role in the story is as a driving force behind Baki’s early life, pushing him into dangerous situations, such as arranging a fight with the yakuza leader Kaoru Hanayama, in order to harden him.

Emi’s key relationships define her entire character arc. Her connection to Yujiro is one of absolute worship and frantic desire to please, though he largely dismisses her, viewing her only as a tool to produce a worthy opponent. Her relationship with her son, Baki, is tragically transactional. She views him not as a child to love, but as a project to complete for Yujiro’s approval. Baki, in turn, desperately craves even a fraction of the love she gives to his father.

Emi’s development culminates in her death during the brutal battle between Baki and Yujiro. At the start of the fight, she stood by Yujiro’s side, cheering for him to harm her son. However, as she witnessed Baki being mercilessly beaten, her dormant maternal instincts finally awakened. Realizing the cruelty of her actions and that she truly loved her son, she rushed to protect him. She struck Yujiro, breaking her wrists, and spat in his face, showing that his brutality no longer impressed her. In response, Yujiro crushed her in a bear hug, breaking her back and killing her. In her final moments, she expressed remorse for how she had treated Baki. She possesses no notable fighting abilities or combat skills; her significance is purely narrative, serving as a tragic figure whose obsession with strength ultimately leads to her demise and fuels Baki’s hatred for his father.
