TV-Series
Description
Captain Gary Strydam, also known as Gerry Strydum, is an American military officer who appears in Baki the Grappler. He holds the rank of captain early in the series and is later identified as a general in the United States Army. Physically, he is a tall and well-built man standing approximately 195 centimeters tall, with short-cut blond hair that later grays with age, gray-blue eyes, and a face marked with numerous scars from his many battles.
Strydam’s history with the series’ central figure, Yujiro Hanma, began during the Vietnam War. He first encountered Yujiro as an enemy when the fighter massacred American soldiers at a headquarters. In a bold move, Strydam attempted to shake Yujiro’s hand, an act that nearly cost him his life when Yujiro used him as a shield against his own men. Strydam survived only because he was wearing a bulletproof vest, an event that left him with broken ribs and a lasting impression of Yujiro’s power. This encounter eventually transformed him from an adversary into a companion and comrade-at-arms, as he developed a deep admiration for Yujiro and began to travel and fight alongside him on battlefields across the world.
In terms of personality, Strydam is a tough and brave individual who typically maintains a calm and confident expression. His courage is significant, as he has shown the willingness to confront dangerous individuals like Hector Doyle and even challenge Yujiro himself, as well as the prehistoric fighter Pickle. However, his bravery is sometimes tempered by recklessness, leading him into dangerous situations. Despite his loyalty to Yujiro, he often finds himself in disagreement with the Ogre’s extreme brutality and ruthlessness. Strydam seems to understand Yujiro’s wild mentality to a degree, acknowledging his status as the only person to bring the United States to its knees, but he personally disapproves of his cruel actions. This moral line defines a key aspect of his personality; he cannot stand idly by when Yujiro abuses his power.
Strydam’s role in the story is largely that of a facilitator and mentor. He serves as a crucial link between father and son, acting as a friend and informant to the young protagonist, Baki Hanma. He keeps Baki updated on Yujiro’s whereabouts and shows great concern for the boy’s well-being. Early in Baki’s journey, Strydam acted as a mentor, advising him on how to grow stronger and even sending him to Hokkaido to fight a group of elite soldiers, though he later feared for Baki’s life when he learned their leader was the legendary super-soldier, Gaia. He organized the site of the fateful first duel between Baki and Yujiro at a United States military base in Japan, a location chosen for its extraterritoriality. He later expressed deep regret for his role in allowing that battle to take place, after witnessing the young Baki be brutally beaten and his mother, Emi Akezawa, be killed.
His key relationships are primarily with the Hanma family. His dynamic with Yujiro is complex; he is a loyal comrade who admires the fighter’s strength but is frequently horrified by his methods. In contrast, his relationship with Baki is more paternal and compassionate, as he has always felt sorry for the boy due to never receiving proper love from his parents. He consistently seems to be more sympathetic to Baki’s side in the father-son conflict, even if he never openly states it. Later in the series, Strydam leads a military force to subdue the caveman Pickle. When conventional weapons and an advanced mech suit failed, he demonstrated his unique brand of bravery and wisdom by stripping off his clothes and approaching the primitive warrior unarmed to prove he was not a threat, successfully calming the rampaging giant.
While not a supernatural martial artist like the main cast, Strydam is a highly experienced and capable soldier. His fighting style is described as a military fighting style, honed through decades of combat. He is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter, capable of defeating trained soldiers, but his true value lies in his tactical mind, extensive combat experience, and unwavering courage in the face of impossible odds. His character shows a subtle development from a simple admirer of power to a more reflective figure who, while still allied with Yujiro, increasingly acts as a moral compass and protector for Baki, often trying to temper the worst impulses of those around him.
