Hidetoshi Nakamura was a Japanese voice actor, narrator, and stage actor born on July 12, 1954, in Tokyo. He was affiliated with the talent agency 81 Produce at the time of his passing. Nakamura died on December 24, 2014, at the age of 60 due to complications from a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
His interest in performance began in his youth; inspired by films and radio, he enrolled in a drama school at 17 and later joined the Rose Theater troupe led by mentor Nachi Nozawa. In 1993, he co-founded the Feydeau Theater to pursue stage work alongside his voice acting career. He was known by the nickname Hide-san among his peers.
Nakamura's career in voice acting spanned from the late 1970s to 2014, encompassing numerous roles in anime, video games, and foreign language dubbing. In anime, he was known for a wide range of characters. Notable roles include Tassilo Wago in Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, Sougen Takamine in both Corpse Princess: Aka and Corpse Princess: Kuro, and Satan Cross in Kinnikuman: Kinnikusei Ōi Sōdatsu-hen. He also voiced Doll Phantom in Bio Armor Ryger, Inagoman in Hyper Doll, and Gid Lucione Deviluke in To Love-Ru. Other significant anime credits include appearances in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Digimon Adventure, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Beyond anime, Nakamura was a prolific voice actor in dubbing foreign films and television series. He provided the Japanese voice for Rocksteady in the TV Tokyo dub of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Legend of the Supermutants. He was also the regular dubbing voice for actor Bruce Willis for a period, taking over the role of John McClane in the Die Hard series from his mentor Nachi Nozawa. His other dubbing work included Pepé Le Pew in Looney Tunes media, Mac Taylor in CSI: NY, and various characters in DC Animated Universe projects.
In addition to his on-screen roles, Nakamura was a familiar voice to Japanese audiences as a narrator for documentaries and educational programs, with one of his most recognizable roles being the puppet character Gorori on the NHK children's show Tsukutte Asobo. Following his death, several of his prominent roles were succeeded by other voice actors, including Mitsuhiro Sakumaki as Gorori and Yoshitada Otsuka for some dubbing parts.
