Description
Mestre Kame, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is the eccentric and highly skilled martial arts master who resides on Kame House, a small island in the ocean. In Dragon Ball Movie 2: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle, he serves as the catalyst for the adventure that drives the story.
His background is that of a legendary warrior who has long since retired from active combat, preferring instead to spend his days indulging in his more frivolous interests, such as watching exercise programs featuring young women and collecting adult magazines. Despite this seemingly lazy and perverted demeanor, he remains a respected figure in the martial arts world, possessing deep knowledge of techniques and training methods.
In this film, Mestre Kame is first seen when Goku arrives at his doorstep seeking formal martial arts training. Shortly after, a young monk named Kuririn also arrives, begging to be accepted as a student. Mestre Kame is initially dismissive of both boys, but Kuririn successfully bribes him with a stack of magazines. Rather than training them directly, Mestre Kame devises a test: he tells them about the legendary Sleeping Princess, a beautiful girl reportedly held captive in the Devil's Castle located atop the five mountains known as the Devil's Hand. He declares that whoever retrieves the Sleeping Princess and brings her back to him will be accepted as his student. This challenge sets the main plot in motion.
Mestre Kame's motivations in the story are twofold. On the surface, he appears to be setting up a simple contest to decide which boy is worthy of his teachings. However, his true intention is to push the boys into a dangerous situation that will force them to grow, demonstrating his unconventional but effective approach to training. He does not provide them with any direct assistance, leaving them to face the dangers of the castle on their own.
His role in the narrative is largely that of a quest giver and a figure of authority. He does not participate in any of the combat that takes place at Devil's Castle. After the adventure concludes, when Goku and Kuririn return with Lunch, a young woman they encountered during their quest, Mestre Kame mistakenly believes that Lunch is the Sleeping Princess. Pleased with the outcome, he accepts both boys as his students, bringing Lunch to live with them as well. This decision leads to a comedic ending when Lunch's violent alter ego emerges and chases him out of his own house.
In terms of key relationships, Mestre Kame interacts primarily with Goku and Kuririn, whom he treats with a mix of amusement and sternness. He has a brief but friendly encounter with Bulma and her friends when they stop by Kame House during their summer vacation, misleading them about the boys' whereabouts. He also shares his home with his loyal sea turtle companion, Umikame.
There is no significant character development for Mestre Kame in this movie; he remains consistent with his established personality: a wise but lecherous old master who values both discipline and laughter. His notable abilities are not displayed in this film, but his legacy as the creator of the Kamehameha technique is referenced when Goku uses it during the final battle. Mestre Kame's true strength lies in his experience and his ability to judge potential in others, which he demonstrates by recognizing the promise in both Goku and Kuririn.
