Description
Go Dougan is a youkai who serves as the main antagonist of the story. He was once an orphaned human acolyte assigned as a personal attendant to Genjo Sanzo. As a child, he had wavy hair worn in a long braid, freckles across his upper cheeks and the bridge of his nose, and wore thin wire-frame glasses. His early demeanor was shy and introverted. His entire world changed when Sanzo told him that they were the same, which led Dougan to become deeply infatuated and fiercely loyal to the monk.

Driven by a powerful desire to be useful, Dougan grew increasingly jealous of the companions Sanzo trusted, such as Goku, Hakkai, and Gojyo. He believed he was not strong enough for Sanzo and left the temple to undergo rigorous training in the mountains. When he returned after three years, he discovered that Sanzo had left on a journey with the very youkai he envied. Feeling abandoned, his obsession twisted into violence. He slaughtered thousands of youkai in a single night, killed a hanyou child, and soaked his hair in its blood until it was dyed red. He also abandoned his glasses as they were no longer needed. In his final form, he wore a black Chinese robe with a gold dragon pattern and a bird mask, and his demon mark appeared across his nose where his freckles once were.

Dougan’s motivation is rooted in a desperate need for Sanzo’s approval and a place at his side. He sought to become a youkai, modeling aspects of himself after Sanzo’s companions: he adopted the loyalty of Goku, the demonic nature of Hakkai, and the red hair of Gojyo, all in a misguided attempt to become what he thought Sanzo needed. He established himself as the lord of a castle and kept Princess Houran as a servant, waiting for the day Sanzo would arrive so he could finally prove his strength.

His relationship with Sanzo is the core of his being. Despite his monstrous actions, he always addressed Sanzo with respect and clung to a memento from their past: a paper plane Sanzo had made. A flashback reveals Dougan asking if he could keep the plane, and Sanzo telling him, "You can only fly those across the blue sky".

In his final confrontation with the Sanzo party, Dougan demonstrated notable abilities as a master of talismans, an expert in all martial arts, and a wizard at conjuring. He was ultimately defeated. As Sanzo prepared to kill him, he recalled the memory of the paper plane before shooting him. Dougan’s body faded away like a paper plane with a hole in it. A paper plane was later seen flying west across the blue sky, symbolizing his death and the continuation of the group's journey.
