Description
Go Dôgan is the main antagonist of the film. He was once a young acolyte and personal attendant to Genjo Sanzo, a role that shaped his entire existence from a young age. An orphan who faced bullying, Dôgan was taken into the temple and found in Sanzo someone who understood his loneliness, leading him to become deeply infatuated and devoted to the priest.

In his early years, Dôgan was a shy and introverted boy, but his loyalty to Sanzo brought him out of his shell. This loyalty, however, was rooted in a deep-seated obsession and a desperate need for approval. He adored Sanzo and wanted nothing more than to be useful to him, to be the one Sanzo relied upon. This desire curdled into intense jealousy, specifically aimed at Son Goku, Cho Hakkai, and Sha Gojyo. He resented the bond Sanzo shared with Goku and was envious of his friendship with the other two youkai, feeling that he had been replaced and left behind.

Driven by this jealousy and a feeling of inadequacy, Dôgan left the temple to train in solitude, determined to prove his strength and earn a place by Sanzo's side. He spent three years refining his skills, mastering martial arts and conjuring. When he finally returned, he learned that Sanzo had departed on a journey with the very beings he envied, a discovery that shattered his hopes. His devotion curdled into a violent, homicidal obsession. In a twisted effort to become strong enough to assist Sanzo, he slaughtered thousands of youkai in a single night, sacrificing them to transform himself into a demon. He also killed a hanyou child and used its blood to dye his hair red, symbolically altering his appearance. He took over a castle, made the captive princess Houran his servant, and waited for the Sanzo party to arrive so he could finally demonstrate his newfound power.

His role in the story is that of a tragic antagonist, a living embodiment of the consequences of obsession and unrequited devotion. He creates a trap for the Sanzo party, using shikigami and illusions to challenge them, driven by a singular, corrupted goal to be acknowledged and used by the man he admires. His key relationships are entirely defined by Sanzo. His entire identity, motivations, and eventual downfall are a direct result of his intense, unreciprocated feelings for the priest. His relationships with Goku, Hakkai, and Gojyo are solely viewed through the lens of rivalry and jealousy, as he sees them as obstacles that took his place.

Developmentally, Dôgan undergoes a stark and tragic transformation. He begins as a timid, well-meaning boy who simply wants to be close to his hero. This pure devotion gradually curdles into an all-consuming obsession, which finally erupts into a violent madness. His arc is a descent from loyalty into delusion, where he believes the only way to be valuable is to mimic the very aspects of the companions he envies—Goku’s power, Hakkai’s demonic nature, and Gojyo’s red hair. His end is poignant; defeated by the very person he sought to impress, his final moments are marked by a flashback to a kinder past with Sanzo, highlighting what his obsession destroyed. His body fades away into a paper plane, a callback to a shared memory, which Sanzo watches fly away.

Notable abilities include his masterful use of talismans and shikigami, which are spirits he conjures to do his bidding. He is an expert in all forms of martial arts and a wizard at conjuring, making him a formidable opponent. After his transformation into a youkai, he gained increased power and a demon mark appeared across his nose, replacing the freckles of his human youth. He also forsook his glasses, as his new demonic form no longer required them, and his hair became long and wild. These abilities are all in service of his ultimate goal: to trap and confront the Sanzo party, forcing them to acknowledge his strength.
