OVA
Description
Gonzalez, known as Gato in the English version of the Chrono Trigger game, is a supporting character in the anime Jikū Bōken Nūmamonjaa. He is a large, bipedal training robot with a cat-like appearance, including distinct ears atop his head. His body is primarily metal and mechanical, and his design notably features a boxing glove stored within a compartment in his chest or navel area.

In the narrative of the OVA, which is set during the night before the Millennial Fair, Gonzalez is initially deactivated at the fairgrounds. He is accidentally awakened when the monster Nuu chooses an inopportune spot to relieve himself. Upon activation, he begins to perform his pre-programmed routine, singing his signature song about his own strength and offering silver points to anyone who can defeat him in a fight. The lyrics to this song are well-known, consisting of simple declarations: "Ahh Gonzalez. I am strong. If you beat me, 15 points". This programmed behavior defines his primary function as a training robot and carnival attraction.

His personality is largely dictated by this programming. He is a mechanical being who follows his directives in a straightforward, even comical manner. He will sing his song and then freeze in place at its conclusion, entering a dormant state until provoked again. He lacks complex emotions but exhibits a form of robotic persistence and indignation. This is most clearly seen when the monsters Momo and Nuu take advantage of his frozen state to draw graffiti on his body, mocking him with words like "moron" and "tone-deaf". This act of provocation causes him to restart his attack sequence with heightened intensity, chasing the pair around the fairgrounds in a berserk state.

Motivation for Gonzalez is simple and mechanical: to challenge visitors to a fight, to give out silver points, and to uphold his programmed identity as a strong robot. In the OVA, his role shifts from a stationary carnival game to an unexpected agent of chaos. His rampage becomes a central element of the plot, as he interrupts a race being held by another character, Johnny. This leads to a comedic chase where the monsters ride on his shoulders, unable to control him. A notable ability displayed during this race is a powerful boost function, which he uses to accelerate past Johnny. His other primary combat ability is the spring-loaded boxing glove that ejects from his chest to strike opponents.

Key relationships in the OVA are brief and antagonistic. He is provoked by Momo and Nuu, who become unwilling passengers in his rampage. He also becomes a rival to Johnny, with the two robotic characters colliding during the race before Gonzalez’s internal glove delivers a decisive punch to his competitor. Though the main characters of the Chrono Trigger game, such as Crono and Lucca, are present at the festival in the background, Gonzalez has no direct interaction with them within the OVA's events. Throughout the short, Gonzalez does not undergo any significant development or change in personality; he remains a machine running its course until it finally powers down as dawn breaks over the festival.
