Description
Morihiko Dan is the founder and principal of the Dan Detective School, a legendary figure regarded as the greatest detective in Japan. Born in 1936, his career as a detective began after he left the police force to open his own private investigation company, the Dan Detective Company. He is notably the only private detective in Japan who is legally licensed to carry a firearm. His reputation was built over a long career solving numerous seemingly impossible cases, a feat that earned him immense respect within law enforcement and the criminal underworld alike.
Dan’s motivations are deeply rooted in a past tragedy involving a powerful criminal syndicate known as Pluto. In a climactic confrontation with this organization, Dan suffered a severe injury that confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Even more devastating was the loss of his best friend and partner, a brilliant detective named Satoru Renjo. Years later, when signs emerged that Pluto was being resurrected, the aging and physically impaired Dan realized his own days were numbered. Unable to directly combat the threat himself, his primary motivation became finding a worthy successor. He opened a special class, Class Q, or the Qualified Class, which he would personally train to carry on his legacy and eventually become the next greatest detective in Japan.
In his role as the mentor of Class Q, Dan is a patient but demanding teacher. He rarely provides direct answers, instead creating elaborate tests and recreating crime scenes to push his young students to their intellectual and ethical limits. He often acts as a silent observer, watching how Kyu, Megumi, Ryu, Kazuma, and Kinta collaborate and apply their unique talents to solve the mysteries he places before them. He serves as the moral and strategic center of the Dan Detective School, assigning the most complex cases to Class Q while assessing which of them possesses the potential to be his successor.
His most significant relationship is with the memory of his former partner, Satoru Renjo. The loss of Renjo is a constant shadow over his actions, and the classroom for Class Q is actually Dan’s old detective office from forty years prior, a place filled with sentimental memories of their partnership. This connection deepens when Kyu joins the school, as Dan recognizes the boy’s potential and later reveals that Kyu is actually the son of his deceased partner. This revelation creates a profound, unspoken bond between them, with Dan acting as a surrogate guardian dedicated to fulfilling the promise he made to Renjo. He is also attended by his loyal assistant, Shino Katagiri, who manages the school's daily affairs and supports him.
Over the course of the story, Dan’s development is marked by his transition from an active detective to a strategic mentor. While he remains a formidable intellect capable of solving any case presented to him, his physical frailty and age become more apparent. The narrative focuses on his success as a teacher, as he watches Class Q grow from talented but inexperienced students into a cohesive team capable of confronting the revived Pluto organization. His personal arc culminates in the validation of his efforts, seeing his students, particularly Kyu, step into the role he had hoped they would fill.
Dan’s notable abilities are almost entirely intellectual. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of criminal psychology, forensic science, and investigative procedure. His deductive reasoning is unparalleled, allowing him to instantly see the solution to a mystery that might baffle professional police detectives. Even confined to a wheelchair, his presence commands authority, and his insights are the final word on any case that comes to his school. He also possesses a deep, strategic understanding of the criminal organization Pluto, making him the only person qualified to prepare the next generation to defeat them.
