Juan Guzmán
Description
Juan Guzmán is a Venezuelan actor and director of dubbing, recognized for a prolific career spanning over three decades in the Latin American voice-over industry. He began his professional journey in 1989, initially working as an audio technician at the Venezuelan dubbing studio Etcétera Group while simultaneously studying theater. His entry into the industry was serendipitous, as he was unaware that dubbing was performed in his home country before a friend informed him of an opportunity. After persisting in his request for a screen test, he was given his first role, a minor character named Jarrón de flor in the Brazilian telenovela Tieta. His first major animated role came when he was personally selected by producer Steven Spielberg to voice the character Hamton J. Pig in the series Tiny Toons.
Throughout his extensive career, Guzmán has lent his voice to a wide array of characters in anime, animated series, live-action television, and film. He is particularly renowned for voicing characters named Rick, including the eccentric scientist Rick Sanchez in the adult animated series Rick and Morty and the reality TV personality Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars. Another landmark role is the title character in Samurai Jack, a performance he has cited as a personal favorite due to the character's philosophy. He is also the voice behind Parche el Pirata (Patchy the Pirate) in SpongeBob SquarePants, Aquaman in various DC animated productions, and Steve from the children's program Blue's Clues. In the anime series Medabots, specifically Medarot Damashii, he voices the character Rokusho, known as Roks in some adaptations. His other notable anime roles include Alex Louis Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Dr. Eggman in Sonic Boom, and various characters in the Transformers franchise.
Guzmán's career is marked by recurring collaborations with various dubbing studios across Latin America, having worked in Venezuela, Colombia, and Mexico. He has also taken on directing roles for dubbing projects, such as for the series Slayers. A versatile performer, he frequently voices a diverse range of actors for Latin Spanish dubs, including Robert De Niro, Kevin Spacey, and Willem Dafoe in numerous films. His work is characterized by a commitment to "calcarla actuación," or closely mirroring the original performance to create a believable result in Spanish.
Among his notable achievements, Guzmán has been recognized for his significant impact on Latin American dubbing, becoming a beloved figure at fan conventions across the continent. He was personally chosen by Steven Spielberg for his first major role, a notable early career milestone. In addition to his acting work, he hosts a YouTube segment titled "Más allá de las voces," where he interviews other Venezuelan voice actors, contributing to the visibility and appreciation of the dubbing profession.
