Description
Nanjiroh Echizen is the father of the series’ protagonist, Ryoma Echizen, and a former professional tennis player who earned the nickname “Samurai Nanjiroh” for his invincible skills. In his youth, he was trained by Sumire Ryuzaki, the future coach of the Seigaku tennis club, and he displayed remarkable natural talent, even discovering the two-handed nitōryū style on his own. After leaving Japan to compete internationally, he remained undefeated and was one match away from securing a Grand Slam title when he unexpectedly retired, reportedly because of his son’s birth.
Personality-wise, Nanjiroh is cheerful, outspoken, and childish, with a shamelessly perverted streak that often leads him to read gravure magazines and flirt openly. He is a very bad liar and spends much of his time lounging around the family temple, smoking, teasing his cat Karupin, and evading serious conversation. Despite this laid-back demeanor, he retains a muscular physique and a sharp tennis mind that he rarely puts to full use.
His primary motivation appears to be enjoyment rather than competition. He retired at the peak of his career not out of injury or loss of interest, but because the birth of his son gave him a reason to step away from professional tennis and focus on his family. He still plays casually, often using his son as a practice partner in one‑sided matches that double as harsh but effective lessons.
In the story, Nanjiroh serves as a background figure and occasional comic relief, but also as the ultimate benchmark of tennis ability. Most characters are aware of his legendary reputation, and his presence looms over the series. He is the original source of many of Ryoma’s signature techniques, including the Twist Serve, Samurai Zone, one‑footed split step, and the overall all‑rounder style. He can play entire matches with both eyes closed and has developed techniques such as the Nanjiroh Zone, a 4.2‑meter circle that draws the ball toward him, and Muga no Kyōchi, the state of self‑actualization that allows him to instantly replicate any observed technique. His playstyle is ambidextrous and he relies on exceptional balance, reflexes, and a pure, almost childlike joy in the game.
His key relationship is with his son Ryoma, whom he both teases and pushes relentlessly. He treats Ryoma’s challenges with deliberate indifference, yet his training methods are the foundation of Ryoma’s growth. He is married to Rinko Takeuchi and has an adopted older son, Ryoga Echizen. His niece Nanako Meino lives with the family, and his cat Karupin is both a companion and a frequent victim of his teasing.
Over the course of the series, Nanjiroh shows little direct development because he is already fully realized as a retired legend. However, glimpses of his past through flashbacks, particularly in the episode The Samurai’s Ballad, reveal the moment he met his wife and the reason behind his retirement, giving depth to his seemingly carefree present. His role remains that of an untouchable master, a source of hidden wisdom, and a humorous counterpoint to the high‑stakes matches around him.
