Description
The Old Master is a nameless elderly martial artist who appears in Street Fighter Alpha: Generations as a mentor figure connected to the central fighters. He is introduced when Ryu visits the dojo of his late master, Gouken. After Ryu experiences a vision of the demonic fighter Gouki, the Old Master approaches him and remarks that he too has just witnessed what a true demon is. He invites Ryu to his home, where Ryu meets his granddaughter Fuka, and offers to train him.
Despite his advanced age, the Old Master is a formidable fighter. When Ryu spars with him, the Old Master easily defeats him, moving with surprising agility and even deflecting or returning Ryu's Hadouken technique, demonstrating mastery far beyond that of a typical elder. He later confronts Ken, who comes looking for Ryu, and defeats him without difficulty. During this encounter, he explains the nature of the Satsui no Hadou, the dark killing intent that dwells within certain fighters, describing it as a mysterious and evil life force that grows stronger the more it is exploited until it consumes the user. He also reveals that the Satsui no Hadou is an ancient force known even to the warlords of the past, indicating his deep knowledge of martial history and the darker aspects of the fighting arts.
In terms of personality, the Old Master is wise, calm, and authoritative, with a grandfatherly demeanor tempered by sternness. He carries a sense of duty and regret. He believes that Ryu must find his own path and his true faith in the martial arts by himself, which is why he stops Ken from intervening in Ryu's confrontation with Gouki. He acts as a gatekeeper of sorts, guiding events from the background while allowing Ryu to face his destiny alone.
His most significant relationships are with Ryu, Gouken, and Fuka. He serves as a surrogate guardian to Ryu, having been entrusted with the boy's care. Near the end of the story, he addresses the sky as if speaking to his old friend Gouken, revealing that Gouken had asked him to look after a young child left in his care after Sayaka died in childbirth, and to make sure that the child did not follow the path that Gouki had chosen. He expresses regret that he failed to prevent Ryu from being drawn toward that dark path. He lives with Fuka, his granddaughter, who appears to be his only family in the present day.
His development in the story is subtle but significant. He begins as an enigmatic stranger who tests Ryu, then becomes a mentor and source of exposition about the Satsui no Hadou, and finally reveals his personal stake in Ryu's fate through his final monologue. At the end of the film, he states that he is too old and that his time has come, and Fuka is later seen praying in tears, implying that he has died. His passing marks the end of his guardianship over Ryu, freeing Ryu to continue his journey.
His notable abilities include master-level hand-to-hand combat, enough to overwhelm both Ryu and Ken in their prime, exceptional agility despite his age, the skill to counter and redirect energy attacks such as the Hadouken, and an extensive understanding of the Satsui no Hadou and the martial lineage connected to Gouken's school. His name is never revealed in the film, and he is identified only by his role as the Old Master.
