Description
Joseph Yaht is a 23-year-old man who appears in the film Turn A Gundam: Earth Light. He is a member of the Maba clan, an ethnic minority from the region of Adeska, which puts him in the same group as the character Mayalito. His early life was marked by tragedy, as his parents were killed, leaving him to fend for himself from the age of three at the base of a mountain. He was eventually found and taken in by a prospector named Sid Munzer, becoming his apprentice and a member of his excavation team.

In terms of personality, Joseph is initially portrayed as brusque, taciturn, and possessing a stubborn, competitive nature. He holds a strong sense of rivalry with the protagonist Loran Cehack. A significant aspect of his early character is his prejudice against the Moonrace, the people from Earth's lunar colonies to which Loran belongs. However, beneath this rough exterior, he is described as a brave man with a good heart.

Joseph's motivations and outlook are heavily influenced by his background as a member of a persecuted minority. This history fuels his initial distrust of outsiders and nobility, and he tends to act with a belief that one must rely on one's own ability to get ahead. While his primary role begins as an assistant to Sid in excavating mobile suits, also known as mobile dolls, his path changes when the war breaks out. He is needed to pilot a FLAT mobile suit recovered from the Moonrace and eventually takes command of the Militia's Jarapyi Squad.

Key relationships define his development throughout the story. His most significant personal relationship is with Fran Doll, a Moonrace woman. Despite his prejudice, she teaches him how to pilot the FLAT, and he eventually falls in love with her, forming a romantic relationship and later having a child with her. He also shares a connection with his fellow Maba clansman Mayalito, showing concern for her future. His relationship with Loran remains competitive; at one point, he steals the Turn A Gundam and fights Loran for the right to pilot it, throwing him out of the cockpit.

Joseph undergoes a noticeable development over the course of the narrative. He begins as a prejudiced individual who turns against Loran upon learning he is Moonrace. As the series progresses, he becomes gentler and his discriminatory views fade, a change largely attributed to his relationship with Fran. His bravery persists to the end, as he participates in the final battles against Gym Ghingham's forces, though he is swiftly defeated when he pilots the Turn A Gundam. After the war, he lives with Fran and raises their child.

Regarding notable abilities, Joseph is a competent mobile suit pilot, taking command of a military squad and piloting machines such as the FLAT. His skills are sufficient for him to seize and attempt to pilot the advanced Turn A Gundam in combat, even managing to defeat Loran in a physical struggle for control of the cockpit.
