Description
In Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, the character formerly known as Char Aznable operates under the alias Quattro Bajeena. At this stage, he is a 28-year-old man with longer, wavy blonde hair, which he often keeps tucked behind a pair of dark sunglasses. He stands at average height and bears a small scar on his forehead from his previous conflicts. No longer wearing the mask that was once his trademark, he has adopted the silver and black uniform of the Anti-Earth Union Group, a faction he serves as a mobile suit squadron leader and captain.
Born as Casval Rem Deikun, the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, his past is defined by the assassination of his father and the subsequent rise of the Zabi family. After nearly two decades of manipulation and warfare, his vendetta against the Zabis was finally realized. Having killed the last of the family at the end of the One Year War, he entered Zeta Gundam as a man without a clear purpose. He adopts the identity of Quattro Bajeena to infiltrate the Earth Federation forces, though he quickly becomes a key figure in the AEUG. Unlike his younger days as the vengeful Red Comet, this version of Char is trying to escape the ghosts of his past and fight for a cause larger than personal revenge rather than for his own ambition.
In Zeta Gundam, Char, as Quattro, is depicted as a reluctant hero and mentor. While he retains his legendary charisma and tactical genius, he actively avoids the spotlight of leadership. He prefers to operate as a soldier under the command of former enemies like Bright Noa, often displaying a sense of fatigue or resignation regarding his own destiny. Despite his composed exterior, he struggles with the weight of his father’s legacy and fears repeating his own past mistakes. This internal conflict makes him more cautious and morally grounded compared to his previous incarnations; he is driven by a genuine desire to dismantle the corrupt Titans and protect the independence of Spacenoids rather than by a thirst for power.
Throughout the Gryps Conflict, Char acts as a mentor to the hot-headed teenage protagonist, Kamille Bidan. This relationship is crucial to Char's role, as he guides the younger Newtype while attempting to distance himself from his old, more ruthless ways. He also forges an uneasy truce with his former arch-rival, Amuro Ray, setting aside their deep-seated grudge over the death of Lalah Sune to fight side-by-side against a common enemy. His key relationships include working under Commodore Blex Forer and later alongside Bright Noa, both of whom urge him to drop his guise and become a true leader for the Spacenoids. His primary antagonists are the Titans, specifically the ruthless Paptimus Scirocco, whose vision for humanity clashes directly with Char’s own.
The character undergoes significant development in this series, primarily moving from a state of aimlessness to a renewed sense of purpose. A pivotal moment occurs when he delivers a passionate speech before the Earth Federation assembly in Dakar. Broadcasting to Earth and space, he renounces the Titans and calls for humanity to migrate into space, reclaiming his identity as a revolutionary in the process. However, despite the AEUG's victory at the end of the Gryps War, Char experiences a profound defeat. Overwhelmed in battle by Haman Karn, leader of Axis Zeon, he is forced to flee, losing his comrades and the future he had fought to build. This loss sets the stage for his eventual disillusionment and radicalization in later stories.
Regarding notable abilities, Char remains an exceptional mobile suit pilot, though perhaps not as aggressively dominant as he was during the One Year War. He relies on a combination of high-speed tactics and precise marksmanship, piloting signature gold-colored suits like the Hyaku Shiki. As a Newtype, his psychic abilities have developed further, allowing him to sense opponents and communicate empathically with other Newtypes, though he considers his abilities inferior to those of Amuro. Beyond piloting, his greatest strength remains his strategic mind and his extraordinary charisma, which allows him to inspire loyalty and sway public opinion through oratory, making him a political threat as much as a military one.
