Description
Irma Beltorchika is a character from the Universal Century timeline, first introduced in the anime series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam as a young operative of Karaba, an Earth-based resistance group fighting the oppressive Titans military force. Her backstory is marked by tragedy, as she was orphaned as a child during Operation British, the devastating Zeon colony drop early in the One Year War. After being adopted into the Irma family, she grew up watching broadcasts of the war and developed a deep admiration for the young Federation ace pilot Amuro Ray. This childhood fascination inspired her to pursue a career in journalism, though her attempts to interview her hero were unsuccessful for many years.
Beltorchika joins the anti-Titans cause as a liaison and field operative. She makes her first memorable appearance piloting a replica 1930s Beechcraft D17 biplane through an active mobile suit battle to guide the transport ship Audhumla to a secret Karaba base. This unconventional arrival demonstrates both her courage and her willingness to take risks. Upon finally meeting Amuro Ray, she immediately becomes attached to him, displaying a passionate and sometimes possessive devotion to the legendary pilot. Her strong-willed nature and tendency to defend Amuro's interests aggressively create friction with several of her comrades, most notably the young pilot Kamille Bidan. At one point, she even attempts to convince Kamille to hand over the powerful RX-178 Gundam Mk-II to Amuro, believing that a hero of his stature deserves the best mobile suit available. Her behavior during this period is often driven by her personal feelings rather than tactical considerations, leading to strained relationships within the group.
Despite her interpersonal difficulties, Beltorchika demonstrates genuine courage and a strong sense of justice. Her most significant contribution to the Gryps Conflict occurs during the Battle of Dakar. Infiltrating the Earth Federation Congress disguised as a news reporter, she helps Karaba operatives take over the session to allow Quattro Bajeena to deliver a speech revealing his true identity as Char Aznable and denouncing the Titans. When the Titans attempt to violently stop the broadcast, Beltorchika goes to the rooftop with her camera, risking her life to film the battle outside. Her footage captures the Titans' brutal willingness to fire on the assembly building, regardless of civilian safety, and broadcasts their crimes to the world. This act plays a crucial role in turning public and political opinion against the Titans. Following the battle, she is last seen manning a gun turret on the Audhumla as the conflict continues.
Beltorchika's primary relationship is with Amuro Ray, which evolves from childhood hero worship into a complex romantic partnership. Throughout Zeta Gundam, she serves as a source of encouragement for Amuro, who is still struggling with psychological trauma from the One Year War, including guilt over the death of Lalah Sune. Other characters, such as Mirai Yashima, caution Beltorchika about rushing into a relationship with someone she does not fully understand. The relationship between Beltorchika and Amuro ultimately ends sometime before the events of the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093. An alternate version of their story appears in Yoshiyuki Tomino's novel Beltorchika's Children, a reimagining of the film Char's Counterattack, where Beltorchika takes on a central role as Amuro's partner and is revealed to be pregnant with his child. In this novel, she even pilots a mobile suit in battle, demonstrating considerable skill.
In later Universal Century chronology, Beltorchika continues to operate as an information network contact. During the events of UC 0096 depicted in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, she contacts Captain Bright Noa to provide intelligence on the covert movements of the Earth Federation fleet, showing that she has maintained her connections and her commitment to the cause of justice long after the Gryps War ended. She is known to have used the journalist pseudonym Karen Russell at various points in her career.
