Description
Caroline is a supporting character who appears in the Pokémon anime during the Advanced Generation series. She is the mother of the main characters May and Max and the wife of Norman, the Petalburg City Gym Leader. Her original Japanese name is Mitsuko. Her family originates from Olivine City in the Johto region before residing in Hoenn.

As a character, Caroline is defined by her warm, supportive, and motherly nature. She is consistently portrayed as a kind and gentle woman who deeply cares for her children and husband. Her primary motivation is the happiness and success of her family. Her most prominent role in the story is as a source of unwavering support for her daughter, May. When May decides to become a Pokémon Coordinator, Caroline becomes her biggest supporter, even traveling to the Hoenn Grand Festival to watch her daughter compete. She is shown to be proud of May's growth, both as a Coordinator and as a person, recognizing how far her daughter has come from her early days of disliking Pokémon.

Caroline’s relationship with her husband, Norman, is a significant aspect of her character. Though she is usually calm, she can display a more assertive side. On one occasion, she became upset with Norman because she believed he was spending more time with Nurse Joy than with her. This conflict was eventually resolved when it was revealed that Norman was secretly working with Nurse Joy to organize a romantic fireworks display for their anniversary, a gesture that delighted Caroline. This incident showcases her desire for affection and quality time with her husband. As a mother, she is caring but can also be firm. She is trusting enough to allow the young trainer Ash Ketchum to travel with her children and look after her son, Max.

Caroline’s involvement in the story extends beyond emotional support. While not a traveling character, she appears in several key episodes. She remains at the Petalburg Gym, often taking care of the Pokémon that May leaves behind, such as her Skitty and Beautifly. A flashback reveals a notable past incident involving her daughter. When a young May was surrounded by a group of Tentacool while swimming, Caroline attempted to throw a Poké Ball to help but accidentally hit her daughter instead. This memory is often used by May's rival, Harley, to embarrass her.

Regarding her abilities, it is implied that Caroline may have been a Pokémon Trainer at some point in the past. A flashback sequence briefly shows a younger Caroline holding a Poké Ball. While no specific details about her training career are provided, this suggests she has prior knowledge and experience with Pokémon beyond that of an average civilian.
