Description
Bleed Kaga, whose real name is Jotaro Kaga, is a Japanese racing driver born on April 1, 1996. He is a central figure in the Future GPX Cyber Formula series, initially appearing as a rival and eventually becoming the protagonist of the final OVA arc, SIN. Before entering the world of Cyber Formula, Kaga was a famous and skilled "crash racer," competing in dangerous, high-stakes underground races on public highways. This background gave him a unique, aggressive driving style and a reputation as a "wild child of the circuit".

Personality-wise, Kaga presents a flamboyant and easygoing exterior, often appearing as a money-driven mercenary in his early appearances. He is fiercely independent and dislikes being tied down by team orders or corporate politics, a trait that led him to intentionally retire from a race against his team's instructions. Beneath this carefree facade, however, he is more reserved, particularly around women, and can be shy. Despite his rough and sometimes dirty driving tactics, he is a highly calculating driver who avoids reckless battles with little chance of victory, showing a steady and intelligent approach to racing.

Kaga's primary motivation throughout the series is his rivalry with Hayato Kazami. He recognizes a unique quality in Hayato and becomes driven to defeat him in a fair and decisive battle. This rivalry is deeply personal, as Kaga sees in Hayato a reflection of his deceased friend, Eiji Aizawa. Kaga and Aizawa both entered the Zero Zone, a heightened state of perception, which led to a fatal crash that killed Aizawa and left Kaga traumatized. Kaga bears the grief of this incident and finds a way to confront his trauma through his intense competition with Hayato. His ultimate goal is not just to win a championship, but to settle this personal score and achieve closure.

In the story, Kaga serves as both an ally and the primary rival to the protagonist, Hayato Kazami. He makes his Cyber Formula debut in the 2015 season but leaves soon after to race in Indy, where he wins two consecutive championships. He returns to Cyber Formula full-time in 2018, driving for Aoi ZIP Formula, and engages in a fierce battle with Hayato in the Zero Zone. His role culminates in the 2022 season (SIN), where he becomes the main character. Facing a team on the brink of disbandment and equipped with an outdated car, he is given the powerful and dangerous Ogre AN-21, a machine with a willful biocomputer that had previously caused the deaths of test drivers. His struggle to tame the Ogre and finally defeat Hayato forms the core of the final arc.

His key relationships include his complex dynamic with Kyoko Aoi, the owner of Aoi ZIP Formula. While he teases her and keeps his distance, he unconsciously becomes aware of her as a woman, and at the end of SIN, he finally accepts her feelings. He is also close friends with his mechanics, Phil Fritz and Gray Stanback, who help him master the Ogre and form his support team. His rivalry with Hayato Kazami is the most significant relationship, evolving from a mentor-like friendship to a lifelong, all-consuming battle on the track.

Kaga undergoes significant development, particularly in the SIN OVA. He starts the 2022 season humiliated by his inferior car, but his determination to beat Hayato drives him to accept the dangerous Ogre. Through his struggles with the machine, he confronts his past trauma over Eiji Aizawa's death. In the final race of the season, he cuts and dyes his hair, symbolically shedding his "Bleed" persona to race as Jotaro Kaga. He finally defeats Hayato to win the World Championship and then immediately retires from Cyber Formula, returning to America and his real name, having achieved his ultimate goal.

Kaga is an exceptionally skilled driver, considered to be on par with Hayato Kazami. He possesses the ability to enter the "Zero Zone," a perceptual state that allows him to foresee opponents' moves, though using it comes with mental and physical strain, exacerbated by his past trauma. His crash racing background gives him a rough, aggressive driving style and a knack for offensive maneuvers, though he uses them judiciously. His most notable ability is the "Mirage Turn," a signature technique he performs with the Ogre. This maneuver involves an impossibly sharp and instantaneous change of direction while cornering, allowing him to overtake on either the inside or outside. The move is so fast that it creates an optical illusion, making the car appear to split into two, making it impossible for rivals to predict or defend against. This technique, born from the perfect synchronization between Kaga's will and the Ogre's biocomputer, is what ultimately allows him to surpass Hayato.
