Description
Li-Shaoran, also known as Syaoran Li, is a central character in the film Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card. By this point in the story, he is approximately eleven to twelve years old and has returned to Tomoeda, Japan, from his home in Hong Kong for a visit. He is a young Chinese sorcerer and an indirect descendant of the powerful magician Clow Reed. In terms of background, he has been trained from a young age in the magical arts by the prominent Li clan of sorcerers. In the film, his role is to support Sakura as she confronts a new and dangerous threat, while their personal relationship takes a significant step forward.

His personality in the movie represents the culmination of the growth he experienced throughout the series. The initial coldness, competitiveness, and arrogance he displayed when he first arrived in Tomoeda have fully softened. He is now deeply caring, protective, and emotionally open, especially towards Sakura. He is serious and determined when facing danger, but also shows a gentler, more vulnerable side. His primary motivation during the film is to protect Sakura and help her overcome the threat of the powerful, unsealed Nothing card. He is also driven by his growing feelings for Sakura, which he now fully acknowledges and acts upon. He takes his role as her ally and protector seriously, willing to put himself in harm's way for her sake.

His role in the story is multifaceted. He acts as Sakura's most trusted partner in the magical battles against the Nothing card, providing crucial support with his own magic and combat skills. More importantly, he serves as a catalyst for her emotional growth. The film revolves around Sakura trying to confess her love to him, and his presence and responses drive the emotional core of the narrative. He is the person Sakura most wants to share her feelings with, and his return from Hong Kong sets the entire story in motion. The climax of his role involves a selfless and powerful act where, in order to save Sakura from the Nothing card's destructive power, he uses the Li family's secret technique to rewrite the contract of the Sakura cards, transferring their ownership from Sakura to himself. This allows him to wield their combined power to shield her, but it also means he temporarily becomes the new master of the cards and the target of the Nothing card's attack.

His key relationships in the film are centered on Sakura Kinomoto, whom he loves and has already confessed his feelings to by this time. Their relationship is the heart of the movie, as they are now a couple in all but name, dealing with the shyness and excitement of trying to express their love. He also interacts with Sakura's friends, particularly Tomoyo Daidouji, who supports their relationship, and the guardian Keroberos, with whom he still has a bickering but friendly dynamic. The film's events also underscore his relationship with his magical inheritance and his family's traditions, as he makes the difficult decision to use a dangerous technique to save Sakura.

His development in the film is profound. He completes his journey from a rival to a devoted partner who is willing to sacrifice everything for the person he loves. The act of rewriting the contract is the ultimate expression of his growth, showing that he now places Sakura's safety and happiness above his own ambitions or heritage. In doing so, he also demonstrates a maturity and selflessness that surpasses his previous character. The film ends with his magical abilities returning and his relationship with Sakura being fully confirmed, marking a significant milestone in his personal story.

In terms of notable abilities, Li-Shaoran possesses strong magical powers inherited and honed through the Li family's training. He uses a magical compass to detect and locate magical sources. He is highly skilled in elemental magic, primarily employing ofuda talismans—specifically wind, fire, thunder, water, and later ice commands—to summon powerful elemental spirits such as the Wind Flower, Fire God, Thunder Emperor, Water Dragon, and Ice Flower. He also wields a family ancestral sword, which he can summon from a jade bead through mental focus. He is proficient in swordsmanship and martial arts, often combining physical combat with his magic. In the film, his most significant display of ability is the secret technique of rewriting the contract of the Sakura cards, which requires immense magical power and demonstrates a deep understanding of card magic, even though he is not their original master.
