Description
Hayato Shingu is the central character of this narrative, a young man whose life was irrevocably shattered at the age of seven. In a single, devastating event, a secret organization known as the Egrigori annihilated his entire village. He was forced to witness the murder of his parents at the hands of an agent named Keith Black, an attack that also resulted in the severing of his own left arm. Following this tragedy, Hayato was taken in by his grandfather, Juzo Shingu, who trained him in the family’s martial arts style. To replace his lost limb and grant him a weapon for the quest it inspired, Hayato was bonded with a powerful, biomechanical unit known as an ARMS, specifically the White Knight, which became his new left arm.
As a person, Hayato is defined by an incredibly passionate and emotionally volatile nature. He lives entirely in the moment, and his mood can shift in an instant from explosive rage to profound shock or deep grief. This is tempered by a powerful, almost instinctive, sense of justice that compels him to leap to the defense of the helpless without a second thought. For much of his early life, this sense of justice was consumed by an all-encompassing desire for revenge against the Egrigori. Haunted by the ghosts of his parents, he hunted down and destroyed the organization’s agents wherever he could find them, driven by a singular goal of retribution.
His role in the story begins to shift when he encounters other young people bonded with ARMS units, such as Ryo Takatsuki. Initially, his ability to sense the vibrations of other ARMS draws him towards potential targets, but these meetings instead forge deep alliances. Through his relationships with Ryo, Takeshi Tomoe, and a fellow ARMS wielder named Kei Kuruma, Hayato begins to gain greater self-control, self-awareness, and compassion. These connections soften his hardened heart, teaching him the value of protection over destruction. This internal change is not just emotional but is directly linked to his power; by eventually abandoning his quest for revenge and choosing to become a protector, Hayato unlocks the ultimate potential of his White Knight.
In terms of his relationships, his early dynamic with Kei Kuruma is notably contentious, marked by constant arguments and friction. However, as they are forced to work together and rely on one another, their respect and affection grow, eventually blossoming into a sustained romantic relationship that continues into the future. His grandfather, Juzo, remains an important off-screen influence, having passed down the Shingu martial arts techniques that form the foundation of Hayato’s fighting style.
Hayato’s notable abilities are primarily derived from his ARMS, the White Knight. Even in its dormant state as his prosthetic arm, the unit’s nanomachines grant him an accelerated healing factor far beyond that of a normal human. In its standard combat form, his arm transforms into an array of fighting blades and projectile launchers for close-quarters battle. The blades produced are said to be made of the hardest substance an ARMS can generate, though their strength is linked to his emotional state and skill. He can also enter a half-transformed state where the nanomachines spread throughout his entire body, dramatically enhancing all of his physical attributes.
The White Knight’s ultimate form, activated solely by a sincere desire to protect others rather than by anger or hate, transforms Hayato into a powerful, armored knight. In this state, he wields the Lance of Mistilteinn, a weapon capable of destroying other ARMS units by injecting an Anti-ARMS Nano-Virus that permanently negates their regenerative properties. This lance can evolve further into a double-pointed energy weapon that projects a destructive field with each swing. Complementing his ARMS, Hayato’s training in the Shingu style of martial arts and his emotional growth allow him to master techniques such as the Heart of Water, a skill that lets him intuitively read his opponent’s movements and anticipate their next attack. He is also capable of detecting the presence of other ARMS users, feeling it as an electric shock-like vibration in his left arm.
