Description
Cliff Gilbert is a character from the Japanese manga and anime series Project ARMS, where he serves as a member of the X-ARMY, a sub-organization of the secretive Egrigori. The X-ARMY is composed of individuals with powerful psychic abilities who are sent to confront the primary protagonists to prove their own superiority. Physically, Cliff is depicted as a teenage male with chin-length brown hair and gray eyes, often seen wearing a suit.

In his initial appearance, Cliff Gilbert stands out as an anomaly among his peers because he cannot use any psychic powers, unlike his younger brother, Yugo Gilbert. This lack of ability is a central aspect of his background, but it changes dramatically when he is awakened by intense anger, unlocking a terrifying and immense telekinetic power. This power is so formidable that he earns the nickname Demon King, given the high risk of him losing control when using it. His abilities function as a form of psychokinesis that allows him to dominate the physical laws within his line of sight. He can use this power for multiple purposes, including crushing buildings, devastating an amusement park, flying at speeds exceeding 200 to 300 kilometers per hour, and creating powerful defensive barriers. His telekinesis is strong enough to effortlessly stop projectiles from an attack helicopter that are capable of destroying similar vehicles with a single hit. In combat, his style is visually similar to the character Magneto from the X-Men franchise.

Cliff’s primary motivation shifts after his awakening and his initial conflict with the lead character, Ryo Takatsuki. Despite his immense power, which allows him to push Ryo back for a time, he is ultimately defeated when Ryo taps into the overwhelming strength of the Jabbawock ARMS, which has the ability to sever telekinetic forces. Following this defeat, Cliff, along with his brother Yugo and their comrade Carol, abandons their mission to attack the ARMS group. Their focus changes to rescuing their fellow X-ARMY members from Egrigori.

This shift reveals a key aspect of his personality: a strong, if initially understated, sense of loyalty and familial bond. The relationship with his brother, Yugo Gilbert, is particularly significant. Unlike Cliff, Yugo possesses psychic abilities from the start, and their dynamic is one of the key relationships in the character’s arc. During a battle against Ryo in a house of mirrors, Cliff chooses to ignore Yugo’s telepathic pleas to stop fighting, which contributes to the conflict and his subsequent defeat. Their brotherly connection and complementary powers have been noted to bear similarities to the X-Men characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

Cliff Gilbert’s development arc is tragically short. After deciding to turn against Egrigori to save his comrades, the group learns that their fellow X-ARMY members have already been disposed of. Before they can act further, they are ambushed by the Red Caps, a lethal unit dispatched to eliminate them. In this final confrontation, Cliff suffers a severe injury to his arm and is then struck by an attack from a Red ARMS known as the Griffin. The assault is fatal, causing him to lose the lower half of his body and leading to his death. His notable abilities, including his potent and destructive telekinesis and his capacity for high-speed flight, ultimately prove insufficient against this new threat, concluding his role in the story.
