Nobuyuki Hiyama
Description
Nobuyuki Hiyama is a Japanese voice actor, narrator, and radio personality born on August 25, 1967, in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima, Japan. He is affiliated with the talent agency Arts Vision. Hiyama's interest in voice acting was sparked during his time in his high school's radio club, where he participated in producing radio dramas. Despite an initial interest in becoming a historian, he chose to pursue a career in voice acting. After graduating, he moved to Tokyo and supported his studies at Tokyo Announce Gakuin through a newspaper scholarship, a period he described as grueling but formative. He made his professional debut in 1989 with a minor role as a mummy in the OVA version of Kaiketsu Zorori.
Hiyama's breakthrough role came in 1992 when he was cast as Hiei in the immensely popular anime series Yu Yu Hakusho. This role established his career and remains one of his most iconic performances. His voice is often described as a metallic lyric tenor, well-suited for young male protagonists, particularly in the mecha, fighting, and fantasy genres. He is especially renowned for his energetic and passionate portrayals of heroic characters, a reputation cemented by his leading roles in two entries of the "Brave" series: as Maito Senpuuji in The Brave Express Might Gaine and as Gai Shishioh in The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. His performance as Gai Shishioh, in particular, earned him the nickname "King of Braves" within the industry. Other significant roles from the 1990s that highlight this range include Shiro Amada in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team and Teppei Takamiya in B't X.
Beyond heroic archetypes, Hiyama has demonstrated considerable versatility throughout his long career. He has effectively voiced cool and collected characters like Hiei, as well as comedic roles such as Harunobu Madarame in Genshiken and the villainous Mr. 3 in the One Piece franchise. His talent extends to voice acting in video games, where he is known for roles such as the adult Link in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Joe Higashi in the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series, and Siegfried and Nightingale in the SoulCalibur series.
Hiyama has continued to maintain a prolific career in the 21st century, taking on a wide array of roles across different mediums. Examples from the user's list include Viral in Gurren Lagann, Uzu Sanageyama in Kill la Kill, Yoshiteru Zaimokuza in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Diabel in Sword Art Online, and Gueira in the Promare films. He has also appeared in recent popular series such as Jujutsu Kaisen as Eso and The Heike Story as Taira no Munemori, showing his continued relevance in the anime industry.
