Description
Fūma Kotarō is a playable character in the Samurai Warriors series, making his debut in Samurai Warriors 2. He serves as the enigmatic and unnerving leader of the Fūma ninja clan and is aligned with the Hōjō family of Sagami province. Kotarō is depicted as an extremely tall figure, standing at 210 centimeters, with an almost inhuman and highly arrogant demeanor that tends to instill fear in those who cross his path. The historical Kotarō is a moniker for the leader of the Fūma ninja, and his true identity remains an enigma, a fact reflected in his portrayal as a mysterious and supernatural presence.

In the Samurai Warriors narrative, Kotarō is defined by his singular, driving motivation: the perpetuation of endless chaos. He is not loyal to any lord or cause in the traditional sense; instead, he views the turmoil of the Sengoku period as a source of personal entertainment. His role in the story is that of a wild card or a chaotic agent who intervenes in major historical events simply to prolong the conflict. For instance, during the battle of Mikatagahara, he is ordered to assist Takeda Shingen but instead kills Shingen to offset the outcome, later forcing a captured Tokugawa Ieyasu and his men into servitude to the Hōjō. Intrigued by the reputation of Oda Nobunaga as the Demon King, he disrupts the Battle of Ōsaka Bay but ultimately decides to spare Nobunaga, leaving him to his fate at Honnōji. Bored with the idea of peace, he has been known to betray and kill his own benefactors to pollute Japan with confusion once more.

Despite his treacherous nature, Kotarō maintains a complex and long-standing relationship with the Hōjō clan, particularly with the wise daimyo Ujiyasu Hōjō. This relationship is formalized through a pact made when Ujiyasu was a child, cementing a bond that is more of an alliance of mutual intrigue than simple vassalage. In the Samurai Warriors 3 expansion, a flashback reveals that Kotarō saved a young, cowardly Ujiyasu from taking his own life, teaching him that fear is essential to being human and offering him a pact. Kotarō often acts as Ujiyasu's cryptic advisor and, later, as a protector of his daughter, Lady Hayakawa, and Kaihime, showing a softer, almost paternal nanny-like side to his usually chaotic persona. He also shares a fierce rivalry with Hattori Hanzō, the Iga ninja serving Tokugawa Ieyasu. This rivalry is a central element of his story, as they compete in a game of shadows to see who can kill the land's unifier first. In later installments, he also forms a rival bond with the wild warrior Keiji Maeda.

Throughout the series, Kotarō exhibits notable character development. In Samurai Warriors 2, he is portrayed as a purely evil and manipulative force, a so-called incarnation of chaos who ruthlessly manipulates history from the shadows. However, starting with Samurai Warriors 3 and continuing into Samurai Warriors 4, his character is softened and humanized. Although he still adores chaos, his actions become more tied to his service to the Hōjō. His story arc becomes more poignant, particularly with the death of Ujiyasu, after which Kotarō chooses to wander before returning to protect the Hōjō legacy one final time at the Siege of Ōsaka.

In combat, Kotarō is known for his superhuman and unorthodox techniques. His primary weapons are clawed gauntlets, which he uses with lightning-fast hand movements to tear through his enemies. His moveset emphasizes agility, confusion, and his inhuman nature. In various games, he is depicted with the ability to stretch his limbs like rubber, summon shadowy blades, and manipulate fire, cementing his image as a demonic or supernatural being rather than a conventional ninja.
