Description
Kojirō, whose full name is Sasaki Kojirō, is a major character in the Duel Masters VS R anime series. He first appears as a rival to the main protagonist, Katta, and remains a prominent figure throughout the Versus saga. Kojirō is a middle school student with a lean, muscular build and a wild appearance resembling a wolf, with spiky hair, sharp eyes, and bandaged arms from his boxing training. He comes from a very poor family and is the eldest of four brothers, taking on the responsibility of raising his younger siblings Daijiro, Chujiro, and Shojirō. To support them, he works multiple part-time jobs, often prioritizing work over dueling tournaments. His family’s financial hardship and his childhood exposure to the extravagant lifestyle of the wealthy duelist Lucifer deeply shape his motivations.

Kojirō’s personality is defined by a relentless “hungry spirit.” He approaches both boxing and Duel Masters with fierce determination, believing that those who treat dueling as a game cannot match his level of hunger. When immersed in a intense duel, his demeanor becomes even more animalistic, earning the description “beast mode,” characterized by sharp eyes and aggressive behavior. Despite this intimidating exterior, he has a more tender side: he is a devoted brother who endures great sacrifices for his family, and he is notably shy around girls, often fainting if they approach him. He can also be comically naive about finances and easily tricked, leading to humorous situations.

His main motivation is to become the strongest duelist in order to escape poverty and ensure a better future for his brothers. Wealth and status are constant concerns, but he also seeks personal growth through dueling. His long-standing rivalry with Lucifer, a wealthy and gifted duelist who defeated him in their earlier encounters, drives him to improve. Kojirō’s role in the story evolves over time. Initially introduced as a harsh rival to Katta in the Versus season, he gradually becomes a distant ally in Versus Revolution and an outright antagonist in Versus Revolution Final when he joins the Rare Killers, a group that hunts rare cards for money. However, he betrays the group and eventually fights alongside Katta and the others against greater threats, showing his growth from a solitary, bitter figure to a more cooperative hero.

Key relationships include his complex bond with Katta, whom he respects as a rival despite their clashes. His enmity with Lucifer is deeply personal, stemming from past defeats and class resentment, but it also pushes him to reach new heights. His three younger brothers are his strongest emotional anchor, and his desire to protect them often overrides his pride. Over the course of the series, Kojirō undergoes significant development. He learns to trust others and accept help, and his perspective on dueling shifts from purely survival-based to including enjoyment and camaraderie. By the end of the series, he pursues an acting career in Hollywood, though he remains committed to dueling and his family.

In combat, Kojirō is both a skilled boxer and a cunning duelist. He specializes in darkness-attribute decks, initially focusing on Fanatic Nightmare and Demon Command Dragon, and later incorporating dark revolutionaries and demon command strategies. His dueling style reflects his hunger, often culminating in a signature “Hungry Draw” that mirrors his instinct to seize victory. A notable ability he develops is his “wolf fang dragon star fist” technique, which allows him to move faster than sound by removing weights from his arms, enabling him to counter Lucifer’s super-hearing ability. This technique places immense strain on his body and can only be used sparingly. Kojirō is also known for adapting his deck across seasons, evolving from pure darkness to hybrid strategies while maintaining a core of aggressive, momentum-driven plays.
