Description
Kogoro, often referred to by his code number 556, is a human-like alien from the planet Keron who works as a space detective in the anime and manga series Sgt. Frog. He is a childhood friend of Sergeant Keroro. His appearance and mannerisms are a deliberate homage to classic tokusatsu heroes, particularly the character of Space Sheriff Gavan, and he is depicted with short black hair and brown eyes.
Kogoro's defining personality trait is an unshakable, if unconvincing, optimism. He is almost always seen with a massive grin and frequently laughs, even when he is depressed about his chronic unemployment or facing financial ruin. Despite a genuine desire to be a champion of justice, he is remarkably incompetent at his chosen profession, struggling with basic detective work and failing to make a living, which leaves him living in a cheap, rundown apartment on a shoestring budget. He possesses a prominent eccentricity in the form of a bizarre obsession with collecting colored boxes and bookshelves, which he often repurposes in absurd and impractical ways.
His primary motivation is his dream of being a successful detective who helps those in need. He has a good heart and is always willing to lend a hand, a trait that Keroro frequently exploits, using him as a test subject for strange experiments or roping him into get-rich-quick schemes.
In the story, Kogoro serves as a recurring supporting character who provides comedic relief through his incompetence, his pretend heroism, and his poverty-stricken lifestyle. He connects the main cast to the wider Keronian universe outside their immediate military mission. His most significant relationship is with Keroro, his childhood friend, which is largely defined by Keroro taking advantage of his helpful nature. He also occasionally interacts with the other members of the Keroro Platoon and characters like the space pirate Lavie. He appears in several of the series' feature films, such as the first Keroro Gunsou movie.
Over the course of the series, Kogoro remains a largely static character. His core traits of cheerful, persistent failure are consistently maintained without major growth or change. His notable abilities are largely non-combative, comprising a strange talent for collecting useless items, an unrelenting smile, and a stubborn determination to continue his detective work despite a complete lack of aptitude or financial success.
