Description
Muruta Azrael is a human born as a Natural, meaning he does not possess genetically enhanced traits. He serves as the leader of Blue Cosmos, an extremist organization dedicated to the eradication of Coordinators, the genetically modified humans who live in the space colonies of the PLANTs. Azrael holds considerable political and economic power as the president of a major weapons manufacturing conglomerate and as a director of the Defence Industry Association, which allows him to exert strong influence over the Earth Alliance command structure and its military decisions.

Azrael's deep-seated hatred for Coordinators stems from a personal trauma: during his youth, he was severely beaten by a group of Coordinators. This experience shaped his worldview and drove him to pursue the complete elimination of all Coordinators, a goal he sees as necessary for preserving a "blue and pure" world. He is cold, calculating, and ruthless, willing to sacrifice allied soldiers and neutral nations to achieve his aims. Despite his ostensibly ideological motives, his actions also serve his personal ambitions and the interests of the military-industrial complex he controls.

In the course of the First Alliance-PLANT War, Azrael orchestrates several key events. Using intelligence provided by the ZAFT defector Rau Le Creuset, he sets up the Cyclops System trap under the Earth Alliance base JOSH-A in Alaska, luring ZAFT forces into a devastating explosion while deliberately leaving Eurasian Federation troops as bait. This not only weakens ZAFT but also consolidates Atlantic Federation dominance over the Earth Alliance. He later pressures the neutral nation of Orb into allowing Earth Alliance use of its particle accelerator, and when Orb refuses, he leads the invasion of Orb, deploying new mobile suits such as the Calamity, Forbidden, and Raider, alongside mass-produced Strike Daggers. His forces overwhelm Orb's defenses, though the particle accelerator is destroyed, giving him only a pyrrhic victory.

During the space campaign, Azrael boards the battleship Dominion and commands three extended pilots. He captures the escape pod carrying Flay Allster, from whom he obtains the data for the N-Jammer Canceller. Using this technology, he convinces Earth Alliance officials to abandon a peaceful energy solution and instead deploy nuclear weapons fitted with N-Jammer Cancellers against the PLANTs, aiming to commit genocide against all Coordinators. As the war reaches its climax, Azrael becomes increasingly desperate, especially after witnessing the destructive power of the ZAFT superweapon GENESIS. When Captain Natarle Badgiruel objects to his orders, he shoots her and takes full control of the Dominion, attempting to destroy the Archangel with its Lohengrin positron cannon. The Archangel, alerted by Flay, retaliates and destroys the Dominion, killing Azrael.

Azrael's key relationships are defined by his manipulative authority. He uses Natarle Badgiruel as a subordinate until she defies him. He collaborates with Rau Le Creuset, though their true goals differ. His interactions with the Orb leadership, particularly Uzumi Nara Athha, are antagonistic. Among the Earth Alliance, he is a shadowy figure who can override military protocol through political and financial leverage. He appears briefly in the side story Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer, where he is shown in a flashback overseeing an anti-Coordinator training camp.

As a character, Azrael possesses no superhuman abilities; his power comes from his wealth, political connections, and the fanatical dedication of Blue Cosmos. He is not a mobile suit pilot and instead commands from the rear, using others to execute his violent plans. His development is minimal, as he remains singularly obsessed with genocide from his introduction to his death, never wavering or reconsidering his actions.
