OVA
Description
Kōta Hirano is a sixteen-year-old second-year student at Fujimi Academy. He is short, overweight, and wears glasses, and before the outbreak he was a frequent target of bullying from classmates and a teacher named Shido. His family is wealthy. Kōta is a devoted gun otaku whose fascination with firearms drove him to take a one‑month training course with the private military contractor Blackwater USA in America, which gave him practical handling skills and a deep understanding of military equipment.
In daily life Kōta is timid, introverted, and often speaks with a soft first‑person pronoun, but when he picks up a weapon his demeanor changes dramatically he becomes confident, precise, and even aggressive. He has a gentle, playful side that emerges most clearly around the young girl Alice Maresato, with whom he often spends time. His principal motivation shifts from simple survival to protecting the group; he desperately wants to prove that he is not the useless person others once saw.
Within the group Kōta acts as the long‑range support and weapons specialist. He customizes a nail gun in the school workshop, acquires a Springfield M1A1 Super Match rifle, and eventually uses a heavily modified AR‑10 as his primary sniper‑style weapon. His accuracy and calm under pressure make him one of the most valuable combatants on the team. When he is unarmed, however, he is physically weak and vulnerable, so he always seeks to keep a firearm nearby.
Kōta’s most significant relationship is with Saya Takagi. He has a one‑sided crush on her, frequently attempts to ask her out, and is just as frequently turned down. Saya often orders him around and teases him, yet she also trusts him with her safety and that of her family. Kōta respects Takashi Komuro as a reliable leader and fights alongside him without jealousy. Toward Alice he is protective and affectionate, almost like an older brother or a doting uncle.
Character development is gradual. Initially Kōta follows orders without question and struggles with low self‑esteem. As the apocalypse continues, he becomes more assertive, begins using a rougher first‑person pronoun, and starts making independent tactical decisions. A turning point occurs when he is forced to kill a human ally to protect the group, which triggers a combat‑stress reaction; he recovers with encouragement from the school nurse. By the time of the Drifters of the Dead OVA, he is confident enough to improvise a fishing spear from a knife and a stick, successfully gathering food for everyone on the deserted island, though he also ends up comically hallucinating and dry‑humping a broom during a mass hallucination incident.
Kōta’s notable abilities include expert marksmanship, detailed knowledge of firearms and military gear, and the capacity to adapt tools and weapons from available materials. He is the group’s only dedicated long‑range fighter, providing cover and eliminating threats before they close in. His emotional vulnerabilities, especially his insecurity and his traumatic response to killing, remain part of his character and humanize him throughout the story.
