Description
Yoshiteru Zaimokuza is a student in Class 2-C at Sobu High School, defined by a pronounced case of chuunibyou, or eighth-grader syndrome, which fuels his delusions of grandeur and a deep fixation on fantasy role-playing. He possesses grey or white hair tied in a short ponytail, black eyes, and wears glasses. Standing as one of the tallest characters and slightly overweight, he consistently wears a trench coat over his school uniform and black fingerless gloves, even in summer, a habit that leads to excessive sweating in any season.

Regarded as weird, gross, and creepy by most students at Sobu High—even more so than Hachiman Hikigaya—his eccentricity expresses itself through intense excitement over chuunibyou-related interests like historical shoguns, magic, writing, and video game creation. He often speaks in grandiose, narrative tones, referring to himself and others in the third person while pulling them into elaborate fantasy scenarios. He harbors a powerful ambition to become a famous light novel author or movie writer and to marry a voice actress. Despite being a terrible writer, he devotes himself fervently to writing novels and carries himself like a professional author, though he has no published works. His script was used in the Class 2-C play during the Cultural Festival. He once considered a career as a creative game writer but quickly abandoned the idea upon learning the company would retain all rights to his work.

Generally easy-going, he recovers quickly from criticism delivered by Yukino Yukinoshita and Hachiman Hikigaya, retaining an undiminished enthusiasm for writing—a trait Hachiman calls writer’s syndrome. Underneath this resilience lies a layer of sensitivity and jealousy, especially around popular individuals like Hayato Hayama. He finds it particularly difficult to speak to girls. A self-avowed loner, he feels most at ease among other loners and maintains many acquaintances in Chiba’s arcades, though he possesses very few genuine friends.

His imagination is highly active, though Hachiman notes it lacks originality. During the Athletic Festival, he was recruited alongside Ebina Hina to brainstorm ideas for a unique final contest. Physically stronger than he appears, he demonstrated this by easily pushing away Yamato, Ōoka, and Tobe with a move he dubs the Zaimokuza Crusher, and by knocking down the red team’s bo-taoshi pole. He also exhibited notable strength and size in the judo competition, teaming with Hayama and Hachiman to reach the finals through consistent 2–0 wins that never required Hachiman to fight.

He goes by several nicknames: Blademaster General (self-appointed), Chuuni-Chan (from Yui Yuigahama and Komachi Hikigaya), Za Za Mushi (from Hina Ebina), and Snowflake (from Komachi Hikigaya).

His background includes a namesake link to Ashikaga Yoshiteru, the 13th shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate; this shared surname triggered his chuunibyou. The surname Zaimokuza may derive from an area in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, where a Shinto shrine named Moto Hachiman (Yui Wakamiya) is located—a possible influence on the names of characters Hachiman and Yui.

Seeking the Service Club’s help to review a light novel entry for a competition, he feared online criticism and lacked friends to offer feedback. After receiving harsh critiques from Yukino concerning spelling, grammar, and unnecessary fanservice, he accepted the feedback sincerely and expressed genuine joy at having others read and comment on his work, vowing to return for future story reviews. This underscored his persistent dedication to writing despite his lack of skill.

His relationship with Hachiman is significant: though Hachiman initially denies their friendship out of embarrassment over their shared chuunibyou past, Zaimokuza remains fixated on Hachiman, partly due to their namesakes—Yoshiteru Ashikaga and the war god Hachiman. Both were loners who could casually admit to having no friends and who struggled to speak to women, though both showed improvement after conversations with Yukino.
