Description
Balmung, also known as Balmung of the Azure Sky, is a legendary player within the online game The World. He is recognized as one of the Descendants of Fianna, a title he earned alongside his partner Orca for defeating the One Sin, an event once considered unbeatable. His character model is that of a charismatic and handsome knight in shining armor, but his most distinctive feature is a pair of unique white wings, which were a reward for his victory over the One Sin. These wings allow him to float and jump higher than other players.
In.hack//Legend of the Twilight, Balmung serves as a System Administrator for CC Corp, the company that runs The World, often working as an event designer alongside his partner and assistant, Reki. Known for creating some of the strangest and most eccentric events in the game, his personality in this series is a significant departure from his earlier, more formal appearances. He becomes a much more easygoing, tolerant, and joking player who rarely takes things seriously, contrasting with his previous belief in strict chivalry and his difficulty in trusting others. However, his deep love for The World and his sense of responsibility remain intact.
Balmung’s primary motivation in Legend of the Twilight is to investigate and resolve the disruptions caused by rogue Data Bugs and hackers. He becomes particularly interested in the twins Shugo and Rena, the winners of a contest to receive character models based on the legendary players Kite and BlackRose. After witnessing Shugo use the Twilight Bracelet to defeat a Data Bug, Balmung realizes the bracelet is key to restoring order and arranges for his friend Sanjuro, a former.hacker, to train Shugo.
His role in the story is that of a guide and protector, though his position as an administrator often puts him in conflict with CC Corp's official policies. When the Cobalt Knights, led by Kamui, are given control over the crisis, Balmung refuses to hand over his findings, leading to his dismissal as an administrator. This is further complicated by Reki’s betrayal, which forces a dejected Balmung to retreat to a remote area of The World. Reminded by Reki that he is still a player and a.hacker, Balmung eventually helps Shugo and his party break into the unreleased root town of Naval Monte to fight the Vagrant AI Morti. Following this victory, he is reinstated as a System Administrator.
In the manga version of the story, Balmung also loses his position after arguing that Vagrant AIs like Zefie and Aura herself are integral parts of The World. Forced to act as a normal player, he contacts the hacker Helba for help and mobilizes other legendary.hackers, including Wiseman and Mistral, to aid Shugo.
Key relationships include his partnership with the long-suffering Reki, his friendship with Sanjuro, and his role as a mentor and tester to Shugo and his friends. His notable abilities include not only his unique flight-granting wings but also his high-level combat skills as a Blademaster and his capacity, as an administrator, to create quests and insert code into the game environment.
