TV-Series
Description
Hiei is a male fire demon born to the Ice Maidens, a race of female demons who reproduce asexually every hundred years, always producing female offspring. A male child is born only if an Ice Maiden has had contact with a male, a forbidden act in their society, and the mother invariably dies after giving birth. Hiei and his twin sister Yukina were born to the Ice Maiden Hina, who wept two Tears of Ice that crystallized into jewels given to each child. Due to being a forbidden male child, he was cast out from the floating Ice Domain by Hina's closest friend, supposedly to his death, but he survived and was raised by bandits in the wilderness. This harsh upbringing caused him to develop a fierce and bloodthirsty nature, though he found moments of peace only when looking at his mother's Tear of Ice jewel.
Hiei possesses a cold, aloof, and arrogant personality, often appearing dismissive of others and speaking in a terse, mocking manner. He typically wears a black cloak-like jacket with a white headband that conceals the Evil Eye, or Jagan, implanted on his forehead. Despite his cruel exterior, he has a complex interior life and values certain relationships deeply, though he is reluctant to admit any form of tenderness or attachment, often making excuses to hide his concern for others. He finds genuine emotion embarrassing, particularly when his companions, especially Yusuke and Kurama, mock his weaknesses regarding his sister.
Hiei's primary motivation throughout much of the story is to locate his missing twin sister Yukina and his lost Tear of Ice jewel. After losing his jewel in a battle, he sought out the osteopath Shigure to have the Evil Eye implanted in his forehead. This surgery cost him his original A-class demon powers, and he had to relearn combat through swordsmanship under Shigure's tutelage. The Evil Eye grants him clairvoyance, hypnosis, telepathy, and the ability to control lesser demons and humans. Once he obtained the Jagan, he easily located the Ice Domain but found his mother's grave, causing his desire for revenge to fade, and instead learned that his sister had run away, beginning his search for her.
Hiei is introduced as an antagonist, one of three demons who stole three treasures from the Spirit World. Using the Conjuring Blade, which turns those it cuts into demons, he planned to create an army and kidnapped Yusuke's friend Keiko. After being defeated by Yusuke with help from Kurama, Hiei became an ally of Spirit World as a form of payment to Koenma, working with Yusuke's team to reduce his sentence. His role in the story evolves from a reluctant participant to a genuine, if still prickly, companion who risks his life for his allies when necessary.
Key relationships define much of Hiei's development. He shares a close partnership with Kurama, whom he met first and trusts considerably, respecting Kurama's skills and strategic mind. His dynamic with Yusuke Urameshi transforms their initial enmity into a grudging mutual respect, with Yusuke's personality gradually softening Hiei's demeanor. He shares a contentious but deepening bond with Kazuma Kuwabara, marked by constant bickering though they fight alongside each other reliably. Hiei's most significant relationship is with his sister Yukina, though he cannot reveal his identity as her brother due to the oath he made to obtain his Jagan, and instead protects her from a distance while she remains unaware of their kinship. Later in the series, Hiei forms a profound bond with Mukuro, a demon king whose traumatic past mirrors his own, becoming her top aide and helping free her from psychological shackles.
Throughout the series, Hiei undergoes notable development. He begins as a vicious villain willing to do anything to achieve his goals but gradually reveals a more principled and even protective nature. During the Dark Tournament, he debuts his signature technique, the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which allows him to summon and control black flames from the demon plane. He eventually masters this technique by absorbing the flames, which greatly enhances his abilities though it leaves him temporarily weakened afterward. After watching Yusuke's death at the hands of Shinobu Sensui, Hiei's old demon powers awaken, elevating him to S-class strength. In the final story arc, he participates in the Demon Plane Unification Tournament and loses to Mukuro, and at the end of the series, he is assigned as a guardian of the portals between the human and demon realms, safely returning humans who wander into the demon world.
Hiei wields several notable abilities. He is an expert swordsman with superhuman speed, often defeating opponents before they can react. He can produce and control fire, using techniques such as the Fist of the Mortal Flames for close-range attacks and the Sword of the Darkness Flame, which channels demon flames into his blade. His most powerful technique remains the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, considered one of the strongest attacks in the series, which involves summoning a dragon of black hellfire to consume his enemies. After mastering this technique, the dragon tattoo appears on his right arm as a permanent mark of his control over the ability.
