Description
Kyokuni Azuma is a former student and a legendary former member of the Seidou High School baseball team, having served as the school’s powerful fourth batter during his own tenure. After graduating, he goes on to become a professional baseball player, a testament to his exceptional skill and the high regard in which he is held. His physical presence is as imposing as his reputation, standing at 193 centimeters tall and weighing 95 kilograms. He speaks with a distinct Kansai dialect, which adds to his brash and outspoken character.

In terms of personality, Azuma is initially presented as a loud and intimidating figure, not afraid to criticize underclassmen harshly. He is known to make blunt and provocative comments, such as calling a player a man with a belly, which reveals a somewhat comical side as he then declares that person is making fun of his charm point. Despite his rough exterior, he has a more thoughtful and encouraging side, especially towards those he respects or sees potential in. He reveals that his harsh shouting is reserved for the players he actually likes, demonstrating a tough-love approach to mentorship.

His primary motivation in his appearances after graduation is to assess the strength of the new Seidou team and to challenge his former juniors to improve. Azuma returns to the Seidou baseball grounds to act as a powerful batter during fielding practice, forcing the current players to hone their skills against a hitter of professional caliber. His role in the story is that of a formidable alumnus and a measuring stick for the current team's progress. The protagonist, Eijun Sawamura, experiences a significant early confrontation with Azuma. In a practice session, Sawamura, with the help of catcher Kazuya Miyuki, manages to strike Azuma out, a feat that overwhelms the young pitcher and becomes a pivotal moment of validation for his potential. For Azuma, this rematch leads him to recognize that this iteration of Seidou could be the strongest in the school’s history.

Azuma shares several key relationships with Seidou players. He is a senior to players like Norifumi Kawakami, the timid but talented pitcher. Azuma takes a special interest in Kawakami, encouraging him to pitch with more confidence, revealing that he only yells at those he truly likes. Even the proud and aggressive Jun Isashiki holds a deep respect and devotion for Azuma, acknowledging his superior ability. He is also compared to the team’s reliable catcher, Chris Yuu Takigawa, who notes that other players look immature when placed next to Azuma.

Development in Azuma is seen less as a personal change and more as a revelation of his existing character. His return to Seidou is not simply to show off but purposefully to help his juniors. He goes out of his way to offer specific encouragement to Kawakami, who was in a slump, showing a deliberate and caring mentorship that lies beneath his abrasive demeanor. Azuma’s notable abilities are his immense power as a slugger. As a former cleanup hitter for a national-level powerhouse and an active professional player, he represents a pinnacle of batting that high school pitchers rarely face. He typically plays as a first baseman or a designated hitter, roles suited for his powerful offensive contributions.
