Description
Aoshi Saginuma is a pivotal character whose presence is deeply felt even after his physical form is lost. He is the older brother of the protagonist, Akashi Saginuma, and was one of the first individuals to pilot the MA-Vess, the large combat robots used to fight the monstrous entities known as Admonitions, which emerge from the mysterious Lightless Realm. His background is that of a skilled scientist who specialized in researching the dangerous and anomalous substance called necrometal, a material that corrupts and infects living things. This expertise made him a key figure in the early efforts to understand and combat the threat posed by the Lightless Realm.

In terms of personality, Aoshi is characterized by a calm, logical, and observant nature. He is a man of few words who relies on data and analysis rather than emotion, approaching problems with a level-headed and pragmatic mindset that makes him a reliable asset in high-stakes situations. This reserved demeanor is underpinned by a strong sense of duty and responsibility, though it can also manifest as inflexibility, as he tends to adhere strictly to rules and his own established ways of thinking. Despite his professional composure, he is driven by a deep personal motivation connected to his work, as his family was touched by a tragedy related to necrometal, giving him a profound personal stake in his scientific investigations.

Aoshi's role in the story is primarily established through his tragic fate before the main events. He was one of the first people to pilot a MA-Vess in the perilous environment of the Lightless Realm, but was eventually consumed and transformed by necrometal. In a desperate measure, he became the first LIM system, a living interface that acts as a core component for a MA-Vess. He specifically becomes the LIM for his brother Akashi's unit, the Argent. This transformation allows his consciousness to persist within the machine, where he continues to play a crucial role by communicating with Akashi and providing guidance, much to the disbelief of other characters who know of his fate.

His key relationships are central to his character and the story's emotional core. His bond with his younger brother, Akashi, is fraught with pain and misunderstanding. Initially, Akashi wishes for his brother to be dead, but as the series progresses and Akashi witnesses Aoshi's memories through their synchronization as pilot and LIM, he comes to understand the immense suffering Aoshi endured. The most significant relationship in Aoshi's life is with Kasane Agura, a fellow scientist at the IX institute and his lover. Their love is a poignant element of the backstory, and Aoshi's final moments are spent using the Argent to protect Kasane from Admonitions, saying goodbye to her before the strain of battle finally destroys his LIM.

Aoshi's development is a tragic arc that unfolds largely through flashbacks and the memories experienced by Akashi. He transitions from a promising scientist and pilot to a victim of the very substance he studied, and finally to a disembodied entity bound to a machine. His journey is defined by sacrifice; he gives up his physical form to become a tool for survival and later fights on despite his deteriorated state to protect the people he loves. His notable abilities stem from his scientific expertise and his experience as an early pilot. More uniquely, he possesses an extraordinarily high synchronization rate with his brother Akashi, which is so powerful that it allows his consciousness to remain active within the LIM and even communicate through the Argent after his physical death.
