OVA
Description
Nakahito Kagura is a young boy living in Japan during the Taisho era. His ordinary life changes dramatically when his classmates dare him to enter a house rumored to belong to a mad scientist. Inside, he discovers a lifelike doll that is actually a Steel Angel, an advanced artificial being. During a military attack on the laboratory, the doll falls onto him, and he accidentally kisses it, awakening the Steel Angel named Kurumi. This kiss bonds them, making Nakahito her master and the one responsible for her activation.
Nakahito is initially portrayed as shy, timid, and lacking in self-confidence. He is hesitant and unsure of himself, often passive and kind-hearted. He struggles to understand his new role as the master of a powerful Steel Angel and spends much of his time teaching Kurumi about the world and how to behave. Despite his uncertainties, he shows a gentle and caring nature, gradually developing deeper feelings for Kurumi as they spend time together. Over the course of the story, his growing affection for her helps him become less shy and more assertive, revealing a hidden inner strength and a willingness to protect those he cares about.
His primary motivation stems from his bond with Kurumi. He wants to keep her safe and help her understand human society, while also learning to accept the responsibilities that come with being a mystic. As a mystic, Nakahito possesses a unique spiritual energy that is essential for keeping Kurumi activated and functional. This power ties them together on a fundamental level, making his role in her existence indispensable.
In the OVA series Steel Angel Kurumi Encore, Nakahito remains the focal point of the Steel Angels' affections. The four short stories include a contest among the Steel Angels to win his heart, highlighting the romantic tension between him and the various angels. He continues to serve as a calm and stabilizing presence for Kurumi, Saki, Karinka, and the others, even as their antics create comedic and occasionally chaotic situations.
Key relationships include his bond with Kurumi, which evolves from a master-servant dynamic into a genuine romantic connection. He also interacts frequently with the other Steel Angels: Saki, who is deeply attached to Kurumi, and Karinka, who is more bratty and competitive. His older brother Kamihito also appears as a supporting character. Nakahito’s interactions with them all contribute to his growth, as he learns to navigate the demands of friendship, loyalty, and love. His development is marked by a gradual increase in confidence and a readiness to stand up for his feelings, particularly for Kurumi, whom he comes to love deeply.
