Description
Karl L. Shubaltz is a supporting character from the anime Zoids: Chaotic Century and its sequel series, Zoids: Guardian Force. His full name in the Japanese version is Karl Liechien Schwarz. He is an officer in the military of the Guylos Empire.
Karl grew up in a wealthy household alongside his younger brother, Thomas. Unlike his brother, who was more interested in machinery and technology, Karl took it upon himself to uphold the honor of the family name. He eventually joined the Imperial military, and due to his skill and dedication, he quickly rose through the ranks, holding the position of Major at the time of his first mission, where he commanded the Imperial 4th Land Battalion in the Red River area.
Throughout the series, Karl is portrayed as a serious and duty-oriented man, but he is also capable of making sarcastic remarks and taking a joke. He is a principled and honorable soldier who genuinely desires peace between the Guylos Empire and the Helic Republic, rather than a prolonged war. A key aspect of his personality is his deep sense of ethics and justice. He is one of the few non-corrupt officers in the Imperial army and despises the scheming and corruption of his superior, Prozen. Despite his personal feelings, he remains undyingly loyal to those he considers his rightful allies, most notably Prince Rudolph.
Karl is a strategic thinker who favors careful planning and the preservation of his forces over brute force or reckless aggression. He is not afraid to order a retreat if it means saving the lives of his troops, a philosophy he demonstrates several times, such as when the Republic's Gojulas appears on the battlefield or when a volcano begins to erupt at his base. He is also highly observant and experienced, possessing a keen awareness of military tactics and booby traps. Despite his strict and often stern demeanor, he shows compassion for others, is polite to his superiors, and cares deeply for his younger brother, though he becomes annoyed when Thomas fails to address him by his proper military title.
His role in the story evolves over time. In Chaotic Century, he initially appears as an antagonist, leading Imperial forces against the protagonists. However, his honorable nature soon becomes clear. He ultimately rebels against Prozen when the regent reveals his true ambitions. Karl gathers a battalion of loyal soldiers and fights alongside the Republican forces to stop Prozen's Death Saurer. In a pivotal act, he sacrifices the fist of his Iron Kong to immobilize the Death Saurer, allowing other pilots to destroy it. In Guardian Force, he has been promoted to the rank of Full Colonel. He continues to be a key figure in the fight against new threats. He is briefly placed under mind control by the antagonist Rease and forced to fight his own brother. Later, he organizes a joint Imperial-Republican mission to stop the evolution of Raven's Geno Saurer and helps defend New Helic City from the forces of Hiltz. He is also put in charge of firing the Ultrasaurus' powerful Gravity Cannon.
Karl shares several significant relationships. His loyalty to Prince Rudolph is absolute, and he serves as one of the prince's most trusted protectors. He has a mutual respect for the protagonist, Van Flyheight, and they frequently work together against common enemies. His relationship with his brother Thomas is a mix of professional frustration and deep familial affection. Finally, his hatred for the corrupt Prozen serves as a powerful motivator for many of his actions throughout the first series.
Throughout his time in the military, Karl pilots several Zoids. His primary Zoids in the anime are the Iron Kong SS and the Sabre Tiger SS, both of which are customized versions of mass-produced Imperial Zoids. He is noted for being the only character in Chaotic Century to own more than two Zoids at the same time.
