Description
Ban Freiheit, often referred to as Van, is the main protagonist from the anime ZOIDS: Chaotic Century. He is a young boy from the Wind Colony, a small village situated on the outskirts of the Helic Republic. As an orphan, he was raised by his older sister, Maria, following the death of their father, Major Dan Flyheight, a respected Republican army officer who was killed defending their home from Imperial forces when Ban was very young. The fate of his mother is never disclosed in the narrative. From a young age, Ban has dreamed of becoming a great Zoid pilot like his father.

Ban is characterized by a spunky attitude and a powerful, unshakable sense of justice. He possesses an open and honest nature that tends to attract others to him, but he can also be somewhat naive and dense, particularly in the early part of his journey. His core philosophy is that Zoids are not merely tools of war but living partners who deserve protection and respect. This belief fuels his Chronic Hero Syndrome, compelling him to intervene whenever he sees something wrong, such as when he defends an escaped prisoner from a mob, regardless of that person's national allegiance. He shows immense loyalty to his friends and will go to any lengths to protect them from harm.

Ban's primary motivation is set in motion when he stumbles upon ancient ruins near his home while fleeing from bandits. Inside, he discovers and awakens a silver Organoid, whom he names Zeke after his father's legendary Zoid, and a mysterious, amnesiac girl who calls herself Fiona. He decides to leave his village to help Fiona recover her lost memories by finding a mythical place known as Zoid Eve, a quest that quickly draws him and his companions into the broader conflict between the Helic Republic and the Guylos Empire.

Throughout the series, Ban evolves from an amateurish and inexperienced pilot into a highly skilled warrior. After the first major conflict, he spends a year training with the Republican army, which significantly enhances his abilities. Following his training, he and Fiona are inducted into the Guardian Force, a joint Republican-Imperial peacekeeping unit tasked with stopping terrorists who threaten the fragile truce between the two nations. His role eventually becomes that of a key figure in saving the world, culminating in a final battle against the ancient super-weapon, the Death Saurer, and its master, Hilz.

His key relationships profoundly shape his journey. His bond with his Organoid Zeke is that of best friends and partners, with Zeke being absolutely loyal and capable of enhancing Ban's Zoid. His relationship with Fiona develops from a protective friendship into a deep, romantic bond that is a core emotional driver of the story. He begins as a rival to the mercenary Irvine but eventually becomes a good friend. His most significant rivalry is with Raven, the Empire's top ace pilot, whom he clashes with repeatedly in battles that push both of them to their limits. He also serves as a big brother mentor to the young Prince Rudolf of the Guylos Empire.

Ban's development is marked by a clear transition from a kid hero to an older, wiser, and more mature young man. His piloting abilities grow in tandem with his Zoids. He initially pilots a versatile Shield Liger, which specializes in deploying an energy deflector shield. After this Zoid is almost completely destroyed in a devastating battle against Raven's Geno Saurer, Fiona and Zeke fuse with it to resurrect and evolve it into the far more powerful Blade Liger, which is equipped with immense physical laser blades for close-quarters combat. His specialty is close-range combat, a style perfectly suited to the Blade Liger. A notable feat of his piloting ability occurs in the finale, where he and his Blade Liger are used as a living projectile, shot out of the Ultrasaurus' massive wave motion gun to destroy the true Death Saurer.
