Description
Kotarou Higuchi is the main protagonist of the anime Pita-Ten. He is a sixth-grade student at Misaki Seiei Private Academy who lives with his father, though his father is rarely home because of work. When Kotarou was very young, his mother died saving him from being hit by a speeding truck. This tragic loss forced him to become self-reliant from an early age and left a deep emotional scar. As a result, he is a quiet, reserved, and stoic boy who keeps to himself and rarely shows his feelings. He is serious about his studies, driven by the pressure of upcoming middle school entrance examinations.

Kotarou’s primary motivation is to get through life with as little disruption as possible. He likes order and predictability and initially resists the chaos that enters his world when the hyperactive apprentice angel Misha moves into the apartment next door. His emotional journey is the heart of the story: over time, Misha’s relentless kindness and cheerful persistence gradually melt his defensiveness. He learns to accept help, to trust others, and to pursue genuine happiness rather than just outward success.

Because he can see angels, demons, and spirits, Kotarou is the human character most directly involved with the supernatural events of the series. This ability is never explicitly explained in the anime, but it places him at the center of the conflicts that arise between the human and celestial worlds. He serves as a bridge for the audience, experiencing wonder, confusion, and growth as he navigates his friendships with beings that most people cannot perceive.

Kotarou’s most important relationship is with Misha. Despite finding her exhausting at first, he grows to care deeply for her and becomes protective of her. He also becomes a close friend to Shia, a demon who first appears as a mysterious girl and later moves into the same building. In the anime, Kotarou has no familial link to Shia, and their bond is one of mutual trust and gentle companionship. His best friend is Takashi Ayanokoji, a talented and popular classmate who often helps him with schoolwork. Another classmate, Koboshi Uematsu, has a hidden crush on Kotarou, but he remains unaware of her feelings. His father, though absent, is a kindly figure whom Kotarou respects.

Throughout the series, Kotarou develops from a lonely, emotionally guarded child into a more open, confident, and optimistic young person. He learns that it is acceptable to rely on others and that joy can be found even in imperfect situations. He becomes more willing to face both everyday challenges and supernatural dangers with courage. By the end of the anime, he has gained a greater appreciation for the people around him and a newfound sense of hope.

In terms of abilities, Kotarou’s most notable trait is his capacity to see angels, demons, and spirits. This gift sets him apart from ordinary humans and draws him into the central conflicts of the story. He also possesses a strong sense of responsibility and resilience. He often puts himself in harm’s way to protect Misha, Shia, and his friends, even when he is frightened or uncertain.
