Description
Hikaru Shiina is one of the two title characters and a central figure in the narrative. Her origin is directly tied to the protagonist, Tsubasa Shiina. During Tsubasa’s first encounter with a hostile alien creature known as a Maguar, a container of a bio-metallic, intelligent substance called a Ribers was ruptured. This substance fused with Tsubasa, transforming her into a powerful battle form called Figure 17 to defeat the monster. When the two separated, the Ribers did not return to its dormant state but instead molded itself into a perfect physical duplicate of Tsubasa. This new being named herself Hikaru. To explain her sudden existence, an alien police officer named D.D. manipulates the memory of Tsubasa’s father, making him believe he has always had twin daughters, and Hikaru begins living with the family as Tsubasa’s sister.
Despite having been born from an alien weapon, Hikaru shares all of Tsubasa’s memories up to the moment of her creation. However, her personality is a stark contrast to that of her twin. Where Tsubasa is shy, introverted, and lacking in self-confidence, Hikaru is vibrant, cheerful, outgoing, and possesses a competitive streak. She is talkative, energetic, and exhibits a natural aptitude for almost everything she tries, from sports to schoolwork, with the notable exception of cooking. This bright and optimistic disposition serves as a catalyst for Tsubasa’s personal growth, as Hikaru constantly encourages her to come out of her shell, make new friends, and try new things.
Hikaru’s primary motivation is the protection and well-being of Tsubasa. In battle, the two must merge once more to become Figure 17, the only entity powerful enough to defeat the Maguar threatening Earth. Within this fusion, Hikaru acts as the power source and combat support, while Tsubasa provides the core will. Because of her nature as a Ribers, she is fiercely protective of Tsubasa, both in and out of combat. She takes on a mentoring and nurturing role, acting as a guardian and cheerleader who helps Tsubasa navigate the difficulties of a new school and the trauma of losing her mother. Hikaru’s entire existence is defined by her relationship with Tsubasa, functioning as her other half, her protector, and her best friend.
As the story progresses, a significant and poignant development occurs. The cumulative damage and strain from repeated battles begin to physically affect Hikaru. Realizing that she cannot stay with Tsubasa forever and that her own existence may be a burden, she purposefully distances herself. She stops merging with Tsubasa for daily activities and instead tries to help Tsubasa build a life and friendships independent of her, demonstrating a deep, selfless love. This period of separation forces Tsubasa to grow on her own, a crucial step in her character arc. In the final confrontation, Hikaru makes the ultimate sacrifice, merging with Tsubasa for the last time to destroy the Mother Maguar. In the end, she tells Tsubasa she loves her and dies, having fulfilled her purpose of not only protecting the world but also of helping Tsubasa find her own inner strength and happiness.
In terms of abilities, Hikaru’s most defining power is her capacity to fuse with Tsubasa to form Figure 17. This fusion is unique and surpasses the capabilities of a standard Ribers, making Figure 17 stronger, faster, and more resilient than any other battle form of its kind. While in her everyday human guise, Hikaru exhibits no superhuman fighting abilities, but she consistently demonstrates exceptional skill, coordination, and intelligence in school and social settings. It is suggested that the very reason she can exist as an individual with a full personality, rather than a simple tool, is an unprecedented anomaly linked to her deep emotional and psychic connection with Tsubasa.
