Description
Demon Eyes Kyo, also known by his true name Kyo Mibu, is a legendary and feared samurai recognized for his distinct demonic crimson eyes, which earned him his infamous nickname. He is called the Thousand Slayer for having killed over one thousand enemy samurai during the historic Battle of Sekigahara. His primary weapon is a legendary nodachi named Tenro, one of the Four Great Demon Blades forged by the renowned blacksmith Muramasa.
In his true form, Kyo has wild, waist-length black hair and striking red eyes. His personality is complex and evolves significantly throughout the story. Initially, he is depicted as a sadistic and ruthless individual who delights in killing his enemies and shows little regard for others. He has a tendency to mock and insult both foes and allies with arrogant and wisecracking comments. However, this bloodlust gradually decreases over time. Although he remains merciless in battle, he becomes quieter and calmer, though he retains his arrogance. Despite his cold and brutal exterior, Kyo is not inherently evil. He forms deep, if understated, attachments, viewing the blacksmith Muramasa as a father figure and mourning his death. He later becomes very protective of the bounty hunter Yuya Shiina, though he expresses this care in a childish and rude manner, frequently calling her names and, in a notable character flaw, often groping her. He also holds a deep sense of responsibility for his beloved pupil, Akira, a peasant boy he found as the sole survivor of a destroyed village and trained to be a great warrior.
Kyo's background is rooted in the secretive Mibu Clan. As a child, he was shunned by most of the clan for his demonic red eyes, accepted only by the former Crimson King, Sendai Aka no Ou. After committing the act of killing Oda Nobunaga, he was imprisoned in the Mibu dungeons. He was later rescued by Muramasa, who trained him in the powerful Mumyo Jinpuu Ryu sword style. As the last remaining True Mibu, Kyo was entrusted by the former Crimson King with a vital mission: to leave the Mibu village and one day return to stop the king should he ever become evil and threaten the world.
His role in the story is set in motion after his defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara by a young man named Kyoshiro Mibu. Instead of killing him, Kyoshiro sealed Kyo's mind and spirit within his own body, hiding Kyo's original body in the forests of Aokigahara. Sharing a body with his rival, Kyo seeks to regain his original form and satisfy his desire for battle and revenge. His primary motivation is to reclaim his body and confront the enemies from his past, including the corrupted former Crimson King.
Key relationships define his journey. His dynamic with Yuya Shiina begins with mutual indifference, as she only sought the bounty on his head. Over time, it evolves into a deep bond; he becomes fiercely protective of her, and her trust in him is a catalyst for his character growth. His relationship with Kyoshiro Mibu is that of a rival and reluctant ally, trapped in a body together. He also leads the Shiseiten, a group he formed to gain enough strength to return to the Mibu village.
Throughout the narrative, Kyo experiences significant development. He transforms from a seemingly mindless, bloodthirsty demon into a more complex antihero whose negative traits soften. His training with Muramasa helps calm his inner demons, and his interactions with Yuya and other companions allow him to show loyalty and care, though he never fully loses his dangerous edge. By the end of the series, he is acknowledged as the strongest fighter and attains the title of the True Crimson King (Aka no Ou).
Kyo possesses a vast array of supernatural abilities derived from his True Mibu blood and his mastery of the Mumyo Jinpuu Ryu Satsujin Ken, the Sword of a Devilish Wind. His most notable ability is his True Red Eyes, which provide a tremendous boost in power by awakening his clan's bloodline, though it is exhausting to maintain. This power can escalate into the Demon God state, where he becomes a mindless berserker of immense strength. He eventually overcomes this demonic influence to become the True Crimson King, gaining full control over his power. His sword style includes basic techniques like Mizuchi, which cuts using air, and Shinkiro, which creates illusions, as well as advanced techniques based on the Four Symbols of Suzaku, Seiryuu, Byakko, and Genbu. These techniques manifest various powers, from incredible flaming attacks to defensive barriers, and the ultimate Golden Wind, Kouryuu. He is also a master swordsman with superhuman speed, the ability to heal himself and others with his blood, and a swordsman's perimeter that allows him to sense enemies.
