Description
Makora, whose true name is Fuuma Kotarou, is a character from the series Samurai Deeper Kyo. He serves as one of the Junishinsho, the Twelve Sacred Generals in the service of Oda Nobunaga. His background is rooted in tragedy and loss. Originally a resident of the Aokigahara forest, he was the childhood best friend of Sasuke Sarutobi. The two spent much of their early lives together, sharing a dream of one day becoming the future red king. However, Kotarou was taken and subjected to experimentation by the Mibu Clan, becoming a failed experiment. This transformation left his body physically decaying, forcing him to wrap himself in black bandages to hide the rot and damage. His hair turned yellow or blonde, and his life expectancy was severely shortened as a result of the experimentation.
In terms of personality, Makora carries a deep, simmering resentment born from a painful misunderstanding. He believed that Sasuke had attacked and nearly killed him, and this perceived betrayal fueled a burning desire for revenge. This bitterness defines much of his early demeanor, making him hostile and single-minded. He often carries stress nuts in his hand, crushing them whenever he thinks about Sasuke, a nervous habit that reveals the emotional turmoil beneath his vengeful exterior. Despite this anger, his core as the original Kotarou was not completely extinguished, and his lifelong bond with Sasuke remained a powerful undercurrent in his actions.
His primary motivation is to confront and kill Sasuke to exact revenge for what he believes was Sasuke's betrayal. This drive leads him to side with the forces opposing the main group. He first encounters the group led by Kyo in the Aokigahara forest, accompanied by Haira. Later, he fights Sasuke in the Mibu territory on Mount Fuji. His role in the story is that of a tragic antagonist whose personal vendetta against his former friend places him in direct conflict with the protagonists, particularly Sasuke and his allies.
Key relationships define his arc. His bond with Sasuke is the most significant; their shared childhood in Aokigahara and their dream of becoming the red king form the emotional core of his story. The false memory of Sasuke attacking him drives the wedge between them. He is also a member of the Junishinsho, placing him in the service of Oda Nobunaga and alongside other sacred generals like Indara, whose manipulation plays a crucial role in his downfall.
Development occurs during his climactic confrontation with Sasuke. In the heat of their battle, the truth is revealed by the real Indara: Kotarou had been temporarily controlled by Indara to attack Sasuke, and Sasuke had only acted in self-defense. The attack that Kotarou remembered as a betrayal was not intentional; all the hatred he had harbored was based on a lie. Upon learning this, Kotarou's anger dissolves, and he reconciles with his friend. In a final act of redemption, he throws himself in front of an attack from Indara intended for Sasuke, sacrificing his life to protect his childhood friend and dying with the truth finally known.
In terms of notable abilities, Makora is a highly skilled ninja and an expert in shadow manipulation. He has the power to control shadow forces and can hide within them, using darkness as both a cloak and a weapon. His signature technique, Kageochi, allows him to make an opponent drown in their own shadow by stabbing the target's shadow with a kunai, effectively immobilizing them. This ability to bind and neutralize enemies through their own shadows makes him a dangerous and crafty fighter.
