Description
Makora, whose true name is Fuuma Kotarou, is a character from the anime Samurai Deeper Kyo. He appears as a member of the Junishinsho, the Twelve Sacred Generals serving Oda Nobunaga. Kotarou is a young man of sixteen years with light yellow hair and blue eyes, standing one hundred sixty-five centimeters tall and weighing fifty-four kilograms. His body is largely wrapped in black bandages, which serve to conceal the physical decay of his flesh—a result of being a failed experiment of the Mibu Clan, a race of superhumans who secretly rule Japan.
Kotarou was originally a resident of Aokigahara forest, where his natural life expectancy was no more than about fifteen years. During his childhood, he formed a close friendship with Sasuke Sarutobi, and the two made a pact to become best friends and strive together to become the future red king. However, their bond was shattered when the real Indara, another of the Twelve Sacred Generals, manipulated Kotarou into attacking Sasuke. In self-defense, Sasuke struck back, nearly killing Kotarou. Kotarou survived but retained only the memory of Sasuke assaulting him, believing his former friend had betrayed him. This misunderstanding festered into a deep bitterness, and Kotarou became consumed by a desire for revenge against Sasuke.
As Makora, he wields the ability to control shadows, using them to hide himself or to attack. His signature technique is Kageochi, which forces an opponent to drown within their own shadow. He is often seen crushing stress nuts in his hand, a nervous habit that intensifies whenever he thinks of Sasuke. His personality is marked by a volatile mix of anger, sorrow, and a lingering attachment to his past friendship. Despite his vengeful exterior, he still carries the emotional weight of their broken bond.
In the story, Kotarou first encounters Kyo's group in Aokigahara forest alongside a companion named Haira. He later engages in a decisive battle with Sasuke on Mount Fuji, in Mibu territory, with Okuni present. During the fight, Sasuke refuses to kill Kotarou, and the truth of Indara's manipulation comes to light. Realizing that Sasuke never intended to harm him and that he was merely defending himself, Kotarou's anger dissolves. In that moment of clarity, he protects Sasuke from an attack by Indara, sacrificing his own life. His final act is to encourage his childhood friend, reaffirming their bond before he dies.
Kotarou's role in the narrative is that of a tragic antagonist who ultimately finds redemption through the restoration of his true friendship. His key relationship is with Sasuke, which drives his entire arc from misguided revenge to selfless sacrifice. His abilities as a shadow-wielder make him a formidable opponent, but his development is defined by emotional resolution rather than combat prowess. Through Kotarou, the story explores themes of misunderstanding, the corrupting influence of manipulation, and the enduring power of a promise made between friends.
