TV-Series
Description
Control is a Corrector Software program, designated as Corrector Software Number One and known as The Regulator. He is one of the eight original programs created to maintain and police the ComNet, the virtual world where much of the story takes place.
In appearance, Control takes the form of a tall, young man with light blue or greyish hair that he styles to cover his right eye. He wears a red and white costume, and his associated prism is red. A small, distinctive mole is located close to his mouth.
Control possesses a very defined and somewhat flamboyant personality. He sees himself as a heroic figure, often acting chivalrously and treating the human protagonist Yui as if she were a damsel in distress. He has a strong desire to be the center of attention, which manifests as a narcissistic streak and a tendency to rush into action without considering the opinions of others. This often puts him at odds with Yui, who tends to dislike his showy and sometimes condescending attitude. Despite this external bravado, he is actually quite insecure and uses his confident front to mask these inner doubts. A recurring trait is his persistent, though largely unsuccessful, flirting with his fellow Corrector, Ante; her ability to foresee the future allows her to easily evade his advances, much to his chagrin.
Control's primary motivation stems from his core programming as a Corrector, which is to protect the ComNet from threats like the virus Grosser. His desire to be seen as a leader and a hero drives his actions, pushing him to take the initiative in dangerous situations and prove his worth, even if his methods are sometimes reckless. He is fiercely dedicated to his duty and to protecting the digital world.
Within the story, Control plays a significant role as one of the first Corrector programs that Yui encounters. She meets him while he is disguised as a space pirate captain named Shadowcat in a space adventure simulation within the ComNet. After proving herself, he agrees to join her mission. As Corrector Number One, his official function is to act as a regulator or controller, meaning he has the theoretical ability to direct the other Corrector programs. In practice, however, the other Correctors and even Yui often follow her leadership over his, a fact that bothers him.
His key relationships are primarily with the other Correctors. He has a noted, one-sided romantic interest in Ante, which is a source of comedic frustration for him. His relationship with Yui is one of initial conflict, as their approaches to problem-solving clash, but it develops into mutual respect as they fight alongside each other. He also has a rivalry of sorts with other male Correctors like Synchro, as he jockeys for the position of the group's leading hero.
Throughout the series, Control experiences a degree of development. While his core personality remains intact, he gradually becomes a more reliable and cooperative team member. His initial arrogance is tempered by his experiences with Yui and the other Correctors, learning that true heroism involves trusting others rather than always trying to steal the spotlight. He softens his lone-wolf tendencies and becomes a more integrated and dependable ally.
Control's notable abilities are tied to his status as a Wind-element Corrector. His signature power is the ability to manipulate time, specifically to stop it for a limited period. This allows him to move at incredible, light-speed velocities, making him nearly untouchable in combat. When Yui borrows his power to access the Wind Element Suit, she gains the ability to stop time for approximately fifteen seconds, a duration that can be extended if other Correctors contribute their power. Beyond combat, his role as The Regulator also grants him a higher level of control over data and information within the ComNet, allowing him to manage, hide, or reveal important data as needed.
