Description
Alma Tandōji is the central protagonist of the story, a seventeen-year-old boy who carries within him the power known as the Sacred Seven, a force he inherited from his mother. He lives in a port city in the Kantō region and stands out with a tall stature and brown hair that reaches his neck, framing blue eyes. A notable physical trait is that he is left-handed, having been originally right-handed until his mother corrected him.
Alma’s past is defined by a tragic loss of control. Several years before the main events, a group of bullies threw away a special crystal that belonged to his mother, which had been acting as a limiter on his powers. In response, his abilities ran wild, and he severely injured eighteen high school students, sending them to the hospital. This incident left deep emotional scars, causing him to despise his own hidden power and live a solitary, isolated life to avoid hurting anyone else. He is known to have a habit of searching riverbeds and other places for interesting rocks, a pastime developed from his ongoing search for his lost, mother-owned crystal.
Personality-wise, Alma initially appears dark and withdrawn, keeping others at a distance and building walls between himself and his classmates, some of whom openly wish for him to leave school. His speech is marked by a habit of starting sentences with the phrase "for now" or "tentatively" in Japanese. Despite his intimidating appearance and standoffish nature, his behavior is less about malice and more about a deep-seated fear of his own destructive potential. His life changes irrevocably with the arrival of Ruri Aiba, a wealthy heiress who asks for his help in fighting monsters known as Darkstones. Although he initially refuses, when a Darkstone attacks his city, Alma reluctantly uses his power, only for it to go berserk again. Ruri saves him by using a sacred stone from her necklace to control his abilities, transforming him into the form known as Sacred Seven Alma Liberator. This event marks his decision to fight against all Darkstones to help Ruri achieve her goals.
Alma’s primary motivation is to gain control over his power and use it for good, driven by his growing connection to Ruri. He develops a strong bond with her, realizing as the story progresses that he had met her once when they were both children. His key relationships include his butler-like classmate Makoto Kagami, who serves as Ruri's field commander; Wakana Itō, a cheerful classmate who is one of the few people unafraid of him and who invites him to join the school's Geology Club; and his rival, Naito Kijima, another Sacred Seven user who escaped from a research facility and seeks revenge on the scientist Yūji Kenmi. As the story unfolds, Alma learns that the man responsible for his past trauma, the attack on Ruri's family, and many other tragedies is Kenmi himself, who had been manipulating events to test and enhance Alma's abilities.
Throughout the series, Alma’s character undergoes significant development. He transitions from a fearful, lonely boy who shuns his identity into a more confident young man who accepts his power as a part of himself. He learns to trust others and rely on his friends, improving his strained relationships with his classmates after he selflessly saves them from a Darkstone incident. In the final confrontation, by truly connecting his heart with Ruri's, he is able to unlock his ultimate form, Sacred Seven Alma Ark, to defeat the main antagonist and save the day.
In terms of abilities, Alma possesses all seven powers of the Sacred Seven, making him exceptionally powerful, even surpassing his rival Naito. His power manifests in two primary forms. When his power is unstable and runs rampant, he transforms into Sacred Seven Alma, a berserker-like figure wrapped in red, mummified bandages who cannot control his own actions. When Ruri uses her own lightstone power to stabilize him, he becomes Sacred Seven Alma Liberator, a more controlled and heroic form that allows him to fight effectively against the Darkstones. In this state, he uses his overwhelming physical strength and energy-based attacks to destroy his enemies.
