Description
Kagerou Shoukiin is a prominent character in the Inu X Boku Secret Service series, introduced as the resident of room 2 at the Maison de Ayakashi, though he is rarely there due to his constant travels. He has a tall and imposing stature, standing at 183 cm, with long black hair that has a subtle blue tint. His human form is almost always seen wearing a distinctive black and gold mask, making his true eye color difficult to discern, along with a dark blue cloak, a white shirt, a black vest, and white boots. When he undergoes his返祖 (返祖) or "return to ancestry" phenomenon, his appearance shifts dramatically to a more traditional Japanese look. In this state, he grows horns on his head, his ears become pointed and elongated, and he dons a loose-fitting black kimono accompanied by a dark blue haori jacket and wooden sandals. In this form, he wields a large Japanese sword, which resembles an oversized pointed nakiri knife wrapped with bandaging on the hilt, as his weapon of choice.

His personality is one of the most distinctive and memorable aspects of the character. He is a self-proclaimed and unapologetic sadist, and he possesses the unique ability to instantly determine whether any person or object is of a sadist or masochist nature. This obsession often leads to him classifying those around him and going on theatrical tirades about S and M dynamics, which has earned him the nickname of the "Super S变态假面" or "super S perverted mask". He delights in teasing and provoking other residents, particularly Banri Watanuki, and often treats his own Secret Service agent, Karuta Roromiya, like a pet or a slave. His bizarre sense of humor is a constant source of chaos, and he frequently brings back strange souvenirs from his travels for the residents of the mansion, which are often obscure torture devices or similarly odd items. Despite this over-the-top and eccentric exterior, there are hints of a more complex and caring individual. For example, while he orders Karuta around, he also shows her genuine kindness, frequently taking her out to eat. Furthermore, his seemingly abrasive behavior is later revealed to be a method of testing the bonds and relationships of those around him.

Kagerou's role in the story is deeply intertwined with the two main protagonists. He is the former master of Soushi Miketsukami, a fact that creates a complex power dynamic between them. Most significantly, due to an arrangement made by their families, he is the fiancé of the female lead, Ririchiyo Shirakiin. His introduction to the plot is deliberately disruptive. His overbearing and eccentric nature often puts him at odds with the developing relationship between Ririchiyo and Soushi, creating both comedic and dramatic tension. However, his character is not a simple antagonist; his actions are frequently a catalyst for unmasking the truth and forcing other characters to confront their own feelings. A pivotal element of his backstory involves his terrible handwriting, which he is deeply ashamed of. This shame is the reason he asked Soushi to write letters to Ririchiyo under his name, a deception that forms a major plot point. When the truth about these letters is finally revealed, Kagerou demonstrates a surprising level of personal integrity by showing Ririchiyo proof of his handwriting and ultimately giving his blessing to her relationship with Soushi, supporting their union rather than claiming her for himself.

His key relationships are central to his character arc. With Ririchiyo, he is her unwanted but persistent fiancé, a status he wields in a mischievous manner, though he never forces the issue in a truly malicious way. With Soushi Miketsukami, he is the former master, and their history includes a past life connection where they were lovers, adding a deep and complicated layer to their present interactions. His relationship with his own Secret Service agent, Karuta Roromiya, is also telling. He may treat her like a pet, but their bond is instinctual and strong; she is fiercely loyal to him, even bursting into tears when his death is announced, and their reunion in the series is warm and affectionate. In terms of development, Kagerou starts as a bizarre, one-note comical figure whose purpose seems unclear. But as the narrative progresses, he is revealed to be a much more sensitive and thoughtful individual who is keenly aware of the feelings of those he cares about. He uses his persona largely as a test, and when it matters most, he sets aside his ego to support the happiness of Ririchiyo and Soushi, demonstrating significant emotional maturity.

In terms of notable abilities, Kagerou's primary power is his返祖 (返祖) transformation, which grants him the enhanced physical attributes of his ancestral youkai form and the use of his sword as a weapon. However, his most unique and defining non-combat ability is his seemingly supernatural skill to instantly judge the S and M nature of anyone he looks at, a talent he applies to people, situations, and even inanimate objects. This skill is the foundation of his entire personality and his interactions with the world around him.
