Description
Kagerō Shōkiin is a resident of the Ayakashi Kan and a central figure in the lives of several other characters. He is an atavist, a human with the ability to transform into a supernatural creature, and in his youkai form, he gains pointed horns and resembles a shinigami. In his daily human guise, Kagerō is a tall young man standing 183 centimeters tall, with black hair and blue eyes, who consistently dresses in ornate, ancient European-style clothing and conceals his face behind a mask.
Kagerō possesses a strikingly arrogant, eccentric, and narcissistic personality, delivered with a loud and dramatic flair. He views the world through a specific and reductive lens, believing that every aspect of existence can be categorized as either sadism or masochism, a philosophy he announces at every opportunity. True to this belief, he is a pronounced sadist who frequently and publicly demeans others, referring to them with derogatory terms such as pigs, animals, or human toilets. Despite this overbearing and flamboyant exterior, Kagerō is far from unintelligent. He possesses a sharp, perceptive mind and has been known to orchestrate elaborate tests of character to uncover the truth about others' loyalties and intentions. Beneath his cruel and controlling façade lies a capacity for genuine care, most notably for his former servant, Soushi Miketsukami, and his own secret service agent, Karuta Roromiya.
Born into the wealthy Shōkiin family, Kagerō's past is deeply intertwined with several main characters. He was the childhood master of Soushi Miketsukami, a relationship where he found Soushi's complete lack of self-respect to be boring. He was also a childhood friend of Banri Watanuki and Zange Natsume, forming a close-knit group with them in their youth. Most significantly, Kagerō was the fiancé of the protagonist, Ririchiyo Shirakiin, a formal arrangement made by their families that Ririchiyo strongly resents. Their primary communication was through letters, though unbeknownst to Ririchiyo, Kagerō's notoriously illegible, kindergarten-level handwriting meant that Soushi was the one who actually wrote them on his behalf. Upon his arrival at the Ayakashi Kan, he immediately disrupts the status quo, revealing Soushi's past service to him and claiming his engagement to Ririchiyo.
His most defined relationships showcase his complex nature. He views his secret service agent, Karuta Roromiya, as both a slave and dear livestock, dressing her in degrading outfits and a dog collar. However, this treatment belies a deeper bond; he comforts her when she is distressed, cooks meat for her as a gift, and she, in turn, expresses a fierce loyalty, not wanting him to end up alone and protecting his coffin. Similarly, his dynamic with Soushi is nuanced. Kagerou admits to feeling abandoned when Soushi found true happiness serving Ririchiyo, even confessing to a feeling of inferiority and anxiety over being replaced. Despite this, his actions suggest a desire to give Soushi the freedom and happiness he never had as his servant. With Ririchiyo, although he was an absent and disinterested correspondent in the past, his reincarnated self expresses a wish for things to be different between them, hinting at previously unexpressed or unrealized feelings.
Over the course of the story, which involves death and reincarnation, Kagerō undergoes notable development. He dies at age twenty-four and is later reincarnated as a twenty-year-old, moving into a different room at the Ayakashi Kan. In this second timeline, while retaining his core sadomasochistic personality, he is depicted as more playful and his inherently caring side is more visible. He notably takes it upon himself to force Ririchiyo to confront reality and recover her past memories, directly impacting the plot's progression. A significant personal development is his effort to improve his terrible handwriting, taking a correspondence course to correct one of his most notable flaws. As a testament to his hidden depths, he once single-handedly folded one thousand paper cranes to create a good luck charm for Karuta, a task requiring immense patience and care that contrasts sharply with his public persona.
As an atavist, Kagerō possesses the ability to transform into his youkai form, where he wields a cleaver-like katana as a weapon. His true capabilities in combat are rarely on display, but his role is often more strategic, using his intelligence to manipulate situations and test the resolve of those around him. His most notable trait is not a physical power but his unwavering, confrontational philosophy that forces other characters to question their own natures and motivations, serving as a chaotic catalyst for the story's central conflicts and character growth.
