Movie
Description
Gondo is the online persona of Tanaka Kakeru, a fourteen year old boy who plays the game The World FORCE:ERA. In the real world, Tanaka is a very timid and serious person who dislikes going home when his parents are around, preferring to play the game in a secluded spot under a tree near a riverbank. His online character, Gondo, is a member of the Berserker class. In terms of appearance, Gondo resembles earlier Blademaster characters from the franchise, such as Orca and Bear, but with heavier and more elaborate armor and distinctive patterns on his body. The name Gondo is derived from gondokujira, the Japanese word for pilot whale, which translates to big head whale.

Gondo serves as a close friend and ally to Sora Yuki, the protagonist of.hack//The Movie. He is responsible for introducing Sora to The World, accompanying her on missions to help her gain experience. His most significant relationship is with another player, Balder, who is his closest in-game ally and best friend in the real world. For Tanaka, playing as Gondo provides a sense of liberation, as he feels he can speak his mind and express his true feelings through the character in a way he struggles with offline. This contrast between his real and virtual personalities is a key aspect of his nature.

A notable incident occurs when Sora mistakes Gondo for Balder, believing that Gondo was the one who confessed his love to her online. This misunderstanding prompts Sora to confront the real Tanaka offline. In the main storyline, Tanaka falls victim to a Virus Bug, a digital threat that renders players unconscious in the real world, turning them into Lost Ones. This event serves as a primary motivation for Sora, who works to destroy the Virus Bug and save him. Tanaka possesses unique and unexplained abilities, as he is able to resist the process of being Real digitalized by the game, exhibiting powers that are somewhat opposite to those of a Doubleware while displaying the same crest. He also experiences dreams that lead him to the location of the missing chip containing the character Aura. After a year in a coma following the events of.hack//Beyond the World, he recovers and joins Sora and Balder to fight alongside other players from the franchise.
