Description
Akira Agarkar Yamada is a main character in the anime Tsuritama, identifiable by his tall stature, sharp gray eyes, black hair, and the brown turban he wears as part of his uniform. He has a tanned complexion that reflects his Indian heritage, and he is almost always seen in the company of his partner, a duck named Tapioca. While he claims to be sixteen years old like his classmates, he is later revealed to be twenty-five, a discrepancy that is met with surprise but never fully explained within the series.

Akira is a member of a secret organization known as D.U.C.K., an acronym for Defensive Universal Confidential Keepers, which is tasked with monitoring extraterrestrial activity on Earth. His primary mission is to observe and spy on Haru, a self-proclaimed alien who has recently arrived on the island of Enoshima. To carry out this assignment, Akira transfers into the local high school and poses as a student, despite his actual age. Throughout his mission, he maintains communication with his organization and his duck companion, often holding conversations with Tapioca as if the bird could respond.

In personality, Akira is initially presented as stoic, mysterious, and intensely professional. He is businesslike in his demeanor, speaks in a brief and direct manner, and is unafraid to voice his opinions. This serious exterior hides a more immature and petty side that emerges as he becomes more comfortable with the people around him. For instance, he secretly hopes for a rival to fail in a competition and can be surprisingly childish when his professional persona slips. Despite his intimidating and abrupt manner, he is generally kind-hearted, though he hates jokes and puns. Beneath his cool and rational surface, he is a loyal and dedicated individual who takes his work and his ideals seriously.

Akira's motivations are rooted in his work with D.U.C.K., though his personal reasons for joining the organization are not fully disclosed. In an official character Q&A, it was revealed that his public reason for joining was a desire to repay an unnamed alien who once saved his life. His real reason for enlisting remains confidential. Prior to being assigned to Enoshima, Akira was stationed in Missoula, Montana, alongside Tapioca, to whom he was officially partnered by D.U.C.K..

Within the story, Akira serves as an observer who gradually becomes an active participant. He initially keeps his distance from Yuki, Haru, and Natsuki, but his surveillance eventually leads him to join their fishing expeditions. His presence adds a layer of intrigue and espionage to the otherwise lighthearted narrative about fishing and friendship. Despite his initial role as an outsider and a spy, Akira develops strong bonds with the other boys, particularly Haru and Natsuki. By the end of the series, he has loosened up considerably and genuinely cares for his new friends, even if he has difficulty expressing his feelings openly. His development shows a transition from a lone operative focused on his mission to a loyal friend who is part of the group.

Akira possesses a number of notable abilities. As an experienced agent, he is skilled in martial arts and the handling of firearms. He is also an accomplished and experienced fisherman, allowing him to contribute meaningfully to the group's primary activity. He is a polyglot, having learned multiple languages through his frequent travels around the world for work. Akira is also physically fit and practices yoga. Beyond his combat and fishing skills, he is a rational thinker who prefers careful planning and detailed strategies, though he can occasionally act on impulse when his emotions get the better of him. A distinctive, if unconventional, ability is his capacity to seemingly communicate with his duck partner, Tapioca.
