Description
Alphonse Elric, often called Al by his older brother Edward, is one of the central figures in the story of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He was born the second son of Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim in the rural village of Resembool. Following the death of their mother from a terminal illness, Alphonse and his brother Edward were consumed by grief and a desperate desire to see her again. Using their prodigious talent for alchemy, they attempted the ultimate forbidden act: human transmutation, seeking to bring their mother back to life. The attempt ended in catastrophic failure. As the toll for this transgression, Alphonse lost his entire physical body, which was taken by a mysterious, omniscient entity known as Truth. In a desperate act of sacrifice, Edward used his own right arm as the material component to perform a soul-binding transmutation, anchoring Alphonse’s soul to a large, hollow suit of armor. A blood rune painted on the inside of the armor serves as the seal that binds his soul to the metal.
Alphonse’s personality stands in stark contrast to that of his hot-headed and impulsive brother. He is consistently depicted as calm, compassionate, and remarkably mature for his age, often acting as the voice of reason and the anchor that grounds Edward’s more explosive tendencies. He is kind-hearted and possesses a deep well of empathy, frequently showing concern not only for his friends but also for strangers and even some of his enemies. Despite the horrific nature of his existence, he retains a notable purity and a gentle disposition, though he also carries a quiet sadness and a deep-seated insecurity about his own identity. The loss of his body means he cannot feel physical sensations such as warmth, pain, or taste, a deprivation he feels acutely. One of his most profound psychological struggles is an existential crisis regarding his own humanity; he is deeply troubled by the fear that his memories and even his soul might be fabricated constructs of his brother, rather than evidence of a real person who once existed.
Alphonse’s primary motivation is the same as Edward’s: to find a way to restore his original body and reclaim the normal life that was taken from him. However, he is adamant that this restoration must happen for his brother as well, refusing to be the sole beneficiary if it means Edward cannot also regain his lost limbs. Beyond this personal goal, he is driven by a strong moral compass. He believes in the principle of Equivalent Exchange, not just as an alchemical law but as a philosophical way of life, and he is committed to protecting innocent people from the machinations of the homunculi and corrupt state alchemists.
Within the narrative, Alphonse serves as a co-protagonist alongside his brother. While Edward is the more famous "Fullmetal Alchemist" who takes center stage in public investigations, Alphonse is his crucial partner in the field. His imposing suit of armor makes him a formidable physical presence in combat, and his extensive knowledge of alchemy makes him an equal partner in their research. As the story progresses, his role deepens from a supportive sidekick to a character who takes independent action, making critical decisions that directly impact the final outcome of the conflict against Father, the primary antagonist. His unique status as a soul bound to armor also makes him a key figure in the philosophical exploration of what it means to be human.
The most significant relationship in Alphonse’s life is with his brother, Edward. Their bond is the emotional core of the series. While they bicker and argue frequently, they are utterly devoted to one another, with each willing to sacrifice everything for the other’s well-being. Alphonse is often the one who restrains Edward’s reckless anger and provides emotional support, while Edward is fiercely protective of Al, driven by intense guilt over being the one who initiated the transmutation that cost Al his body. Another key relationship is with their childhood friend and mechanic, Winry Rockbell, who is like a sister to them both. Alphonse takes great pleasure in teasing Winry about her obvious feelings for Edward. Their stern alchemy teacher, Izumi Curtis, also plays a crucial role, having trained them in both martial arts and alchemical theory. Later in the series, he forms an important alliance with May Chang, a young alchemist from the country of Xing, who is one of the few people who can see his soul and treat him with genuine affection despite his armored form.
Alphonse undergoes significant character development throughout the journey. Initially, he is defined by his supportive role and his hidden despair. A turning point occurs when a deranged killer named Barry the Chopper sows doubt in his mind, causing him to question whether he was ever a real human being or just a fabricated personality created by Edward. He overcomes this crisis by reaffirming his trust in his brother and the validity of his own memories and feelings. As the story reaches its climax, he becomes more proactive and self-sacrificing. In a pivotal moment during the final battle, he willingly gives up his soul to Edward, allowing his brother’s right arm to be restored in exchange, an act that shows his complete selflessness and agency. Ultimately, his journey concludes with his full restoration when Edward gives up his own alchemical power to bring Alphonse’s body back from the Gate of Truth.
Despite lacking a human body for most of the story, Alphonse possesses a range of notable abilities. He is a highly skilled alchemist, having studied the craft from a young age under Izumi Curtis. After being taken by the Gate of Truth and witnessing it firsthand, he gained the rare ability to perform transmutations without drawing a transmutation circle, simply by clapping his hands together, a skill only a handful of alchemists possess. He is also an exceptionally capable hand-to-hand combatant. His large, heavy armor body serves as a natural weapon, granting him immense durability and superhuman strength, such as being able to crush a pistol in his grip. Because he has no biological functions, he does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe, and he feels no pain, giving him a significant advantage in endurance over a normal human opponent. However, this invulnerability has a single, critical weakness: if the blood seal on the inside of his armor is completely damaged or erased, his soul will be permanently severed from the physical world and he will cease to exist.
