Description
Illumi Zoldyck is the eldest son of Silva and Kikyo Zoldyck, born into the infamous Zoldyck family of assassins and raised from birth to continue that deadly legacy. He is a professional assassin of immense skill, holding a Hunter License which he obtained during the 287th Hunter Examination under the disguised identity of Gittarackur. Physically, Illumi is tall, standing approximately 185 centimeters, with an androgynous appearance characterized by very long, jet-black hair usually combed back and large, dark, expressionless eyes. His default expression is an emotionless mask, making his true thoughts and feelings impossible to discern. He is capable of dramatically altering his facial structure and voice by inserting numerous special round-headed pins, a painful transformation he uses for infiltration and which creates his Gittarackur persona.
Illumi's personality is defined by a chilling and practical ruthlessness, combined with a superficially pleasant and sometimes absent-minded tone of voice that contrasts sharply with his cold demeanor. His entire worldview has been shaped by his upbringing; he is the perfect product of the Zoldyck family's brutal training, viewing emotions as a liability and subservience to the family's goals as the highest virtue. The core of his twisted psychology is a possessive and controlling version of love for his younger brother, Killua. He genuinely believes that his harsh methods are a form of protection, intending to mold Killua into a flawless assassin capable of surviving in their dangerous world. To this end, he implanted a specialized Nen needle into Killua's brain, which subconsciously forced him to retreat from any fight he perceived as potentially unwinnable, a manipulation so subtle that even powerful Nen users like Isaac Netero did not detect it. Illumi sees Killua not as an independent person but as a puppet of darkness, whose only joy should come from killing, a belief he and his father Silva instilled.
In the story, Illumi serves as a major antagonistic force, particularly in relation to Killua's character development and his friendship with Gon Freecss. His primary motivation is to ensure Killua returns to the family and fulfills his role as the heir to the Zoldyck assassin business. He views Gon as a dangerous and corrupting influence because Gon encourages Killua to break free from his conditioning. During the Hunter Exam, Illumi psychologically tormented Killua into forfeiting their match by threatening to murder Gon, demonstrating his willingness to use extreme emotional manipulation to achieve his goals. He also maintains a long-standing and unconventional partnership with the magician Hisoka, which appears to be a mutual alliance based on convenience and respect for each other's strength rather than genuine friendship. Their relationship is pragmatic; they assist each other with missions, such as Illumi impersonating Hisoka to infiltrate the Phantom Troupe's hideout in Yorknew City, but are also fully aware they may one day try to kill one another.
Illumi's relationship with the rest of his family is complex. He is notably obedient to his mother, Kikyo, who sent him to watch over Killua during the Exam. His interactions with other brothers, like Milluki, tend to be transactional. However, his stance toward the youngest sibling, Alluka, is starkly different. Like most of the family, Illumi fears Alluka's reality-altering wish-granting ability and views Alluka as a dangerous monster rather than a sibling. During the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, Illumi becomes fixated on controlling or eliminating Alluka, believing Killua's plan to use Alluka's power to heal Gon will lead to catastrophic mass death. This obsession demonstrates a slight development in his character, as he shifts from a passive executor of the family will to an active, ambitious agent willing to clash directly with Killua to secure what he perceives as a necessary outcome.
As a Nen user, Illumi is classified as a Manipulator and is exceptionally powerful, with Hisoka ranking his overall ability at 95 out of 100, placing him above some of the elite Zodiac Twelve. His primary weapons are his needles, which are infused with his aura. His signature Hatsu abilities revolve around their use. He can manipulate his own physical form for disguise by rearranging his facial structure with pins. Offensively, he can throw needles with incredible accuracy to create Needlemen; when a needle pierces a target's skull, the victim loses all independent will and becomes a mindless puppet that follows Illumi's commands until death, with no chance of recovery even if the needle is removed. He can also control corpses in a similar fashion. Beyond his Nen, Illumi possesses the physical and mental conditioning typical of a Zoldyck heir. This includes superhuman strength, agility, and endurance, as well as a very high tolerance to pain, poisons, and electricity, allowing him to remain completely composed even when his arm is broken. In the film Phantom Rouge, Illumi appears and his abilities are consistent with this established portrayal as a formidable and calculating manipulator.
