OVA
Description
Keigo Ugachi is a character exclusive to the original video animation of Deadman Wonderland, serving as the primary antagonist in the prequel story that explores the past of Senji Kiyomasa. He is a man in his mid-thirties with a distinctive appearance, featuring short, spiky white hair and green eyes, typically dressed in a crisp white suit over a black shirt with a black handkerchief in the breast pocket.
Ugachi is the former leader of a local criminal organization called Goreless Peace, a gang that hypocritically claims to be protectors of the people while in reality they only harass and exploit them. Very little is known about his background before becoming the gang's chairman, but his defining traits center on his philosophical fixation with sound. He frequently comments on the world being cacophonic or harsh-sounding, expressing a deep preference for complete silence. This fascination with auditory stillness ultimately extends to his view of death, which he sees as an escape to a place with no sound at all.
In terms of personality, Ugachi presents himself as composed and measured, using his interest in sound as a lens through which he views others. He demonstrates an ability to detect whether a person possesses a Branch of Sin simply by listening to the rhythm of their heart and comparing it to the sound his own makes. Beneath this contemplative exterior, however, lies a ruthless and cruel nature. When his offer to recruit Senji into Goreless Peace is refused, Ugachi responds with brutal violence, burning down the orphanage that Senji frequently visited and murdering everyone inside, including the caretaker Hinata and a young boy named Izuru whom Senji had befriended.
Ugachi's role in the story is to serve as the catalyst that transforms Senji Kiyomasa from a hot-tempered police officer using his powers to fight crime into a vengeful killer seeking retribution. The confrontation between the two men forms the emotional core of the OVA, exploring how Senji became the person he is by the time of the main series. Ugachi himself is also a Deadman, infected with the Nameless Worm that grants him the ability to freely manipulate his blood outside his body. His specific Branch of Sin is called Wire Lyre, which allows him to create a web-like construct from his blood that can entangle opponents and inflict severe injuries. He also displays exceptional speed, capable of bypassing Senji's defenses before Senji can react.
During their final battle, Ugachi traps Senji in his blood web and critically wounds Senji's superior officer Domon. This act of violence pushes Senji to break through his own limitations, extending his Crow Claw to stab Ugachi through the chest. Despite being at Senji's mercy, Ugachi does not show defiance but rather requests to be finished off, expressing his desire to be sent to a place of silence. However, when Senji raises his claw for the killing blow, Ugachi flinches in fear, revealing the cowardice beneath his philosophical pretensions. Senji ultimately spares him, and Ugachi is arrested by the police. Given that he was captured alive, it is likely he was subsequently sent to Deadman Wonderland, though his ultimate fate remains unknown as he is never mentioned again in the series. His creation for the anime adaptation suggests he may have existed in some form conceptually, as a variation of his Branch of Sin ability appears used by another character in the original manga.
