Description
Mako Reizei is a second-year student at Ooarai Girls Academy and the driver of the Anglerfish Team’s Panzer IV. She is small in stature, with waist-length thick black hair held back by a white headband, and sleepy-looking dark hazel eyes. Her expression is often moody or blank, and she carries a quiet, gloomy air. She has a strong tendency to fall asleep easily and especially hates waking up in the morning, which makes her late to school almost every day. Despite her habitual tardiness, she is an academic genius, consistently achieving top grades and learning new subjects almost instantly after reading about them. This intellectual quickness extends to tank operation: she mastered driving a World War II tank simply by reading the manual.

Mako’s background includes a personal tragedy: she lost her parents in an accident when she was in elementary school. Prior to that accident, she had argued with her mother and never had the chance to apologize, a regret that weighs on her. She now lives with her grandmother, who is very important to her. Though Mako can appear cold and aloof, she is deeply caring toward those she trusts, polite in her interactions, and fiercely loyal to her friends.

Her motivation for joining the school’s sensha-do team is practical rather than passionate: her chronic lateness caused her to have insufficient academic credits, so she participates in tankery to earn the credits needed to continue her studies. Over time, however, she becomes an integral member of the team, contributing her exceptional driving skills and quick-thinking ability to crucial battles. She rarely shows overt enthusiasm, but her actions demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and a quiet determination to support her teammates.

Within the Anglerfish Team, Mako works closely with commander Miho Nishizumi, gunner Hana Isuzu, loader Yukari Akiyama, and radio operator Saori Takebe. Her relationships with them grow from simple teammates into genuine bonds of friendship, and she gradually becomes more comfortable expressing her care through actions rather than words. Her development is subtle: she remains sleepy and laconic, but she learns to rely on her friends and to contribute her unique talents to the team’s success.

Notably, Mako’s driving ability is among the best in the series. She can perform precise maneuvers and navigate difficult terrain with instinctive skill, often turning the tide of a match. Her calmness under pressure and her capacity to absorb technical information rapidly make her an indispensable asset to Ooarai’s tankery efforts.
