Description
Oryō, whose real name is Takeko Nogami, is a supporting character in the anime Girls und Panzer. She is a second-year student at Ooarai Girls Academy and a member of the Hippo Team, where she serves as the driver of the team's StuG III assault gun.
Oryō is part of a four-person crew of history enthusiasts who go by "soul names" taken from historical figures. Her chosen name comes from Narasaki Ryō, the wife of the Bakumatsu-period samurai Sakamoto Ryōma, a figure Oryō deeply admires. Her interest concentrates on the Bakumatsu period, the final years of Japan's Edo era, about which she has detailed knowledge. This devotion shapes her personal style: she adopts a distinctive way of speaking that ends sentences with "zeyo," a phrasing she uses to evoke the era, and her appearance, including her blue-black hair and under-rim glasses, is likewise inspired by the historical period she studies and the people connected to Sakamoto Ryōma.
Within the Hippo Team, Oryō tends to be calmer and less flamboyant than her teammates, who enthusiastically dress up and speak as their chosen historical figures. Even so, she shares their passion and fits naturally into the team's identity as a group of history-loving girls. The four teammates live together in a shared Japanese-style house where each member posts a nameplate bearing her historical alias, reflecting how fully they have incorporated their chosen personas into daily life.
Her role in the story is as the driver of the Hippo Team's StuG III during Ooarai's sensha-dō, the school sport of tank combat. Because the StuG III is best suited to ambush fighting rather than sustained mobile combat, the team's tactics depend on positioning the vehicle in cover and letting the gunner strike from concealment. Oryō's driving is therefore central to this approach, even if the driver's work is less visually prominent than that of crew members in more mobile tanks. Her historical knowledge also supports the team's methods, as the Hippo Team draws on its understanding of past battles when planning engagements.
Her key relationships are with her three crewmates: Caesar, who serves as loader; Erwin, the tank commander and radio operator; and Saemonza, the gunner. The four form a tightly knit unit, living together and sharing a common enthusiasm for history, and their coordination in battle reflects that closeness. Her admiration for Sakamoto Ryōma is the personal quality that most defines her, giving her a distinct voice and look within the ensemble.
Over the course of the series and its later installments, Oryō continues to appear as the Hippo Team's driver as Ooarai competes in tournament and exhibition matches. She does not undergo a major personal transformation; instead, her role stays consistent with her place in the team, and she remains recognizable for her calm demeanor, her devotion to the Bakumatsu period, and her steady handling of the StuG III.
